- Holy ash (bhasma) given to Swarswati
We are all well aware of the name of Mahayogi Shree Gorakhnath. By the mercy of Macchendranath, Gorakhnath came into existence. From him, Gorakhnath attained his knowledge of yog. Yogiraj Macchendranath composed the sawari mantra as he had the boon of Lord Bhaskara -‘If you chant any mantra associated to me then you will attain siddhi and I’ll ever be ready to help you’.
By the guidance of lord Bhaskara, Macchendranath attained siddhi by creating this mantra. Once on his way to a pilgrim, he reached a place called Bangal where there was a village by the name of Chandragiri. A pious and religious brahmin called Sarwopadyal lived in that village. He had a wife named Saraswati. She was beautiful, pious, dutiful and loyal woman. But they were miserable since they could not conceive a child.
One day Macchendranathji arrived at their doorstep for alms. Upon hearing the word ‘Alakh’ Saraswati came out with alms to find an extremely radiant and extraordinary yogi standing in front of her. She looked at him with great expectations after giving the alms. Yogiraj quickly understood that this woman was suffering.
He asked ‘What is the reason to your grievance?’
She replied ‘Maharaj, i have no other grievance except for the fact that i do not have a child. Please show me a way by which i can bear a son.’
Macchendranathji dug his hand into his bag and took out a little bit of holy ash and handed it to Swaraswati and warned her ‘ Mix this holy ash with kheer (a dish made with milk, rice and sugar) and consume it only after taking seasonal bath at nightfall which will grant the fulfillment of your wish. This child will be the incarnation of Lord Hari himself. He will be the master of opulences and acquisitions of supernatural powers. I will once again return here after twelve years to provide guidance to him.’
The yogi continued his way after taking his share of alms. Saraswati took the holy ash inside and kept it in a safe place. She had just finished her chores in the afternoon when some of her neighbors came by for a visit. They talked. During their conversation Saraswati came to mention about the yogi and the holy ash which she showed to her fellow neighbors. Then one of her neighbor said ‘ You have gone mad. Do you think you can trust these jogis? Who knows what they give away? It is said that they bewitch you and take you away and some even say that they give you poison on the saying of your enemy. They bewitch you and rob you off. So think about what you’re doing.’
The next one resentfully added ‘ Who knows how many innocent women have been the victims in the name of these sadhus. They lose their money, their respect, everything and what can any one do when everything is lost. I wonder about those many gruesome incidents, all thanks to these pretentious sadhus.’
No one insisted Saraswati on taking the holy ash. Saraswati now seemed doubtful. She thought ‘Whatever they are saying its not a myth. These things have taken place but my heart says this yogi is different. His face had such radiance yet still i think it is not wise to go through something that might have the possibility of any kind of loss.’ With this thought Saraswati made up her mind not to. She threw the designated holy ash into a composit pit outside the village. This was her misfortune that she had destroyed the desired fruit by herself. Her fate was to remain childless so how would she ever agree on eating the holy ash.
But the delivering unerring holy ash had had to take effect. The villagers used to throw cow dung and other wastes into the pit in which the holy ash was thrown as of which the holy ash in its seed form had good accommodation to thrive. But this occurred so slowly that it came to no one’s notice. Day by day on count, twelve years went by and Saraswati was still mourning upon her childlessness.
- The birth of Gorakhnath
Twelve years had gone by. Macchendranath ji remembered his promise to Saraswati on giving her son guidance. So he headed towards Chandragiri village. He thought that Saraswati had bore a son by now who would now be in his 12th year of age. Macchendranath ji arrived at her doorstep. ‘Alakh’ he said and Saraswati came out with alms to be given. She was astonished to find the same yogi who had given her the enchanted holy ash for childbirth after twelve years in front of her.
Saraswati was terrified that the yogi would be furious if it came to his knowledge that the holy ash was discarded and he would curse her. So she thought of just giving the alms away. But the yogi refused to take alms and instead asked her about her child.
‘Mata, your son must have grown now. Wont you show him to me?’
Saraswati didn’t know what to say. Seeing her in silence he asked her once again ‘ Tell me. Didn’t you have a son or did he die after being born. But i am confident that the holy ash i granted you is nothing but fruitful.’
At last Saraswati had to tell the truth though she was shivering with fear. But Macchendranath remained calm and asked where she had thrown the holy ash. She politely showed him the way to the compost pit.
After carefully observing the pit where cow dung and other wastes were usually thrown Macchendrath ji called out towards the pit ‘Hey Hari Narayan, son of Lord Surya. If you are in there please come out. Make no delay.’ There was no reply at first but on being called the third time a voice was heard ‘I have already come into existence but I’m hidden under this pile of dung.’ Saraswati and the other villagers were baffled when they heard the voice. Under Macchendranath’s command the villagers dug out the dung and wastes to find a radiant youth of age around 12 sitting beneath.
‘Son, come out now. You are the fruit of my enchanted holy ash. Since you were conceived and nurtured by cow dung the name Gorakshanath or Gorakhnath would be appropriate for you. ‘
Gorakhnath came out and touched Macchendranath’s feet. Macchendranath put his hand on Gorakhnath’s head and blessed him.
Seeing the child Sraswati could not control her tears and she regretted her stupidity upon doubting the yogi. She once again looked at Macchendranath with high hopes.
Machendranath ji said ‘Mata, what can we do now? You never had the fate to have a child so how would you ever possibly have one. The mistakes that one makes they themselves will bear the consequences. Now all you can do is make peace with the thought that maybe this was the will of God.’ Macchendranath ji consoled the crying woman ‘You should pray and please the almighty. This is the best way to find righteousness. (Even the expectation of a son should be from the aim of righteousness ). But if son is a bad son it burns you all your life and becomes the cause to unrighteous path.’ This way Macchendranath made Saraswati understand and then he said to Gorakhnath ‘ Lets go now son. There is no meaning in staying here any longer.’
‘As you wish gurudev(teacher)’. And they made their way together to pilgrimous journey.
During this journey with Gorakhnath, Macchendranath walked in the daylight and at night used to reside in a monastery or some holy place outside a village. They never stayed in one place more than one night. This way they entered the kindom of Utkaal. His wish was to see lord Jagaannath. On their way they stayed in an outworn temple outside a village. The place where they stayed was called Kanakiri after the name Kanakgiri hill.
Macchendranath wanted to test Gorakhnath on his faithfulness and dutifulness towards his guru. He thought of a clever situation and called Gorakhnath and said ‘Son, i am really very hungry. I do not understand what may have caused my hunger yet its necessary that it be taken care of.’
Gorakhnath insisted ‘Then tell me gurudev what is it that you wish.’
Macchendranath said ‘The solution to this is you go to the village right away and ask for alms.’ As commanded Gorakhnath made haste towards the village. He went to many doorsteps and pronounced ‘Alakh’ but was not able to gain any provision. However, at one brahmin’s house he saw a crowd and headed there. Food had been already given out to the brahmins after they’d performed the cremation’s ceremony. Seeing this Gorakhnath thought this was the best place to seek alms and so he said ‘Alakh’ standing at the doorstep. Seeing a guest seeking alms at the door the hostess seemed pleased and put together all types of food well enough and gave it to Gorakhnath. Gorakhnath was really happy to accept so many types of delicacies and made rush to serve his guru. On seeing the many delicacies Macchendranath was pleased himself. Macchendranath started his meal. One by one he tasted the food and each time he appreciated everyone of it. From all of it he loved the dahi bade(a type of sweet) made of undh pulse. After he finished the meal he said to Gorakhnath ‘Gorakhnath, this meal was really delicious but since these bades were the most delicious of all my wish is to have some more of these bades. So please return to where you received these and ask for more.’
Gorakhnath knew nothing more than to serve his guru and it was not in his nature to have doubts about him. He quickly made his way but he had a doubt that maybe this time the housewife may refuse to give him the bades. But still he stood there and said ‘Alakh’ the housewife came out only to find the same yogi to whom she had earlier given a handful. She seemed a little annoyed and harshly said ‘You had just now taken plenty of the finest food from here. Why have you come again. Didn’t it fill your appetite. ‘
Whatever Gorakhnath had suspected so it happened. But since he was obliged to his obedience towards his guru he politely requested her ‘ Mata, i’m accompanying my guru who is staying outside this village in a deserted place. I served him whatever food you gave to me and he seemed really satisfied and pleased.’
‘ What do you want now?’, she asked.
‘My guruji’s wish is to have some more bades. He seemed to like them the best. So, would you please be merciful to grant me some.’
The woman was furious and said scornfully- ‘Jogi, you seem to be really greedy and gluttonous. It is astonishing that after taking so much food yet you are here. Your palate is tempting for these bades and your staking the name of your guru for your greed.’
Gorakhnath replied ‘Whatever I’m saying is true. I did touch the ration that you gave but I’ve not even tasted a single one. I’ve come here once again under my guru’s wish and command.’ The woman said offensively ‘You are not a jogi. You seem to be a cheat or else a jogi is never gluttonous like you. They only wish well for others.’
Still Gorakhnath remained untouched by her insults and pleaded once again ‘Mata if you have any sort of problem I’ll be more than willing to solve it. You can ask whatever you want from me but to fulfill my guru’s wish won’t you be kind enough to give me at least one bade?’ the woman said with a little humbleness ‘Jogi what do you have that you can offer me?’
Gorakhnath replied ‘I have nothing yet i have everything. Whatever you ask for i can give you. But you must give me one bade.’
The woman sarcastically said ‘Alright then. One eye for one bade. Tell me is that acceptable to you?’ Gorakhnath agreed.
‘I’ll bring the bade till then you must take out your eye.’
The brahmani went inside for the bade. Meanwhile Gorakhnath put his finger into his eye and pulled out an eyeball. His socket was bleeding. When the brahmani returned she was speechless at the presentation of the scenario.
Terrified she said ‘Here, take the bade.’
Gorakhnath took the bade with his right hand and advanced the left hand in which the eyeball was, towards the brahmani. She took no notice and quickly went inside terrified.
He shouted out ‘Mata, please take this eyeball. I am standing here waiting.’
The brahmani regretted what she had said. She thought for a while on what should be done. Upon hearing the yogi calling over and over she shouted out from inside ‘Go away jogi. I do not want your eye. I’ve realized what I’ve said and I’m really ashamed.’ Upon hearing this Gorakhnath moved on. He didn’t want Macchendranath to learn about this incident so he cleaned his eye and wrapped it over his head with a wet clothe.
When Macchendranath saw the bade in front of him and a bandaged Gorakhnath he asked ‘Why is your eye bandaged?’
Gorakhnath replied trying to hide the incident ‘Gurudev, its not a big deal. It’s just my eye was hurting a little.’ Macchendranath asked ‘What is the reason to this pain. Be specific.’
Gorakhnath gave in ‘Guruji, on returning to the same place the housewife seemed angry and agreed to give me one bade for one eye.’
When Macchendranath heard of this he felt a little tensed. Gorakhnath thought that maybe knowing this Macchendranath would do something. So he said ‘Guruji, whatever happened, the brahmani is not to blame so i request you to forgive her.’
Macchendranath replied ‘If you have forgiven her already why would i want to do her any harm? But i must say i am very much pleased with your generosity and compassion.’
‘This virtue was given by you guruji otherwise how would i have such thoughts.’
‘Son Gorakhnath, i fully trust you and i am confident that you are the greatest guru devotee and you can even give up your life for the fulfillment of your guru’s wishes. For this I’ll make you profound in all knowledge.’ Gratefully Gorakhnath bowed and Macchendranath asked him to sit in front of him and asked for his eyeball. Gorakhnath gave the eyeball to his guru. Macchendranath dipped the eyeball in water and cleansed it and put it back in Gorakhnath’s socket and started chanting some mantra by which the eye was cleansed and the pain was gone and Gorakhnath started seeing again. A guru had found an eligible disciple and he had also passed his test. He gave all sorts of vedic education and made him fully knowledgeable. Now Gorakhnath had also become a mahayogi and al knowledgeable.
- Narsingh’s boon and others
Macchendranath continued his journey alongside Gorakhnath. They stayed at a place for some days where Macchendranath taught different types of education to Gorakhnath. Once Macchendranath went to lord Narsingh’s temple and started his sadhana. Gorakhnath made available necessary commodity and would seek alms. In due time Gorakhnath himself under his guru’s command started Narsingh’s spiritual practice. After few days Narshingh appeared before Macchendranath. Lord Narsingh asked Macchendranath to ask for a boon to which he said ‘Lord, i have your full mercy. What would i ask for other than to be your devotee.’
Lord Narsingh said ‘Yogiraj, your devotion will always remain. If you want anything apart from this i shall grant you.’
‘Then lord, please bless my student with the full potential to conquer any obstacles.’
‘May your wish be granted.’
With this the lord vanished into thin air. On the same day he appeared in front of Gorakhnath and asked what he wanted. Gorakhnath said ‘Lord, may i be my guru’s attending follower and your devotee.’
‘That I’ve given but your guru has asked me to endow you with potential and valiance. That too you shall have. You’ll never have to be disappointed.’
With this lord Narsingh disappeared. Gorakhnath told his guru about the incident and Macchendranath was happy and said ‘With the mercy of the lord you will be fully competent.’
After that Macchendranath started the worship of many other gods and goddesses and with each asked for a boon for Gorakhnath. Once knowing the intention of Macchendranath goddess Bhagwati Mahismardini granted all types of supernatural powers to Gorakhnath. A similar boon was granted by Bhagwati Mahakali. Macchendranath always had the blessings and mercy of lord Ram and his loyal devotee Hanuman. He was successful in attaining their blessings for his student Gorakhnath. Once both Macchendranath and Gorakhnath started the worship of Ganeshji to please him. During his spiritual practice Ganeshji gave them his grace. Guru Macchendranath asked for a boon ‘O lord BInayak! Give my student such intellect that he be the knowledgeable of all knowledge.’ Ganeshji granted him his wish. Ganeshji turned to Gorakhnath and Gorakhnath said ‘I wish that devotion may always remain at guru’s feet’. Hearing this Ganeshji was pleased and granted him yet another boon that he be accomplished in all. By the mercy of lord Bhaskar and guru Macchendranath Gorakhnath attained the life elixir mantra and likewise received many other boons from yaksh, rakches, bhoot, preet, pisach, betal, yogini, bhairav, birbhadra, and other shivguns.
- Clay made Gahininath and his revival
Sadhussanths, yogis and yatis no matter what they do that is more than enough. their many works unknowingly become miracles. This way they are renowned. But the ones with great roles do not wish to demonstrate such miracles. So they remain in such state that no one can identify them as one because if it happens that will attract a mass of covetous people behind them. This way it creates obstacles in their way of yog practice. Gorakhnath too used to stay away from such demonstrations. He never wanted people to chase him around which was the reason that he never tested his powers.
One day Macchendranath and Gorakhnath had taken refuge outside a village. Under his guru’s advice Gorakhnath started revising his life elixir knowledge which is why he couldn’t go asking for alms. So Macchendranath himself went. No one was around except for Gorakhnath. Suddenly little kids from the village came to where Gorakhnath was practicing and started playing around. They made a lot of noise and Gorakhnath wanted those kids to go away since they were disturbing his concentration. But still he kept his determination strong and concentrated on his spiritual practice. Just then the children decided to make a toy vehicle out of the mud and also make a driver out of it. They took fresh earth, molded with some water and started sculpting it into a vehicle but they were unsuccessful because they didn’t know how to make one. The children saw Gorakhnath and thought of asking him to make it. They said ‘Sadhu baba, please would you help us make this vehicle’
‘I dont know how to make one, how is it made? Now go far away from here and play.’ Gorakhnath unwillingly replied.
But the children stubbornly stated ‘You know how to read then how do you not know how to make a vehicle. We’ve heard that the ones who know how to read can make almost anything.’ Another child said ‘He knows how to read. He definitely knows how to make a vehicle.’ Gorakhnath still insisted he did not know.
‘You know! You know!’ they all said at once ‘please make it for us. What is going to go wrong if you make one for us.’
With the thought of getting rid of the kids Gorakhnath instructed them on making the vehicle and continued with his chanting. The children followed his instructions and made a vehicle and they were overjoyed at its completion and started shouting ‘We’ve made it! We’ve made it.’ Then one said ‘There should be someone to ride this. We should make one chauffer out of mud too.’ So they started to make a driver out of mud. But they couldn’t give it a form so they turned to Gorakhnath once again. ‘The vehicle has been made. It needs a person to drive it but we are unable to make one. Please baba ji would you make us one.’ To avoid any further intrusion Gorakhnath took the wet clay from them and started making it. At this time Gorakhnath was still continuously chanting the sanjivani(elixir) mantra between which the idol of the driver was being prepared. The idol of the chauffer was not even fully prepared when it started moving but it was taken ordinarily as it was thought to be moving in the process of making it. The chauffer was in completion. While in construction of its senses the chanting of the sanjivani mantra was going on due to which transmission of life was being fed. This was the reason of the chauffer moving. The toy chauffer was starting to come alive. It didn’t take long before the mud started turning into seven different elements. The toy had skin in its exterior and its internals transformed to bones, muscles and blood. Since all five senses were composed in it, he seemed as ordinary as any other child. The chauffer toy now had spurred into life and said ‘Hail to gurudev!’
The other kids were frightened at this and started to run away shouting ‘Ghost! Ghost!’ and soon the whole village came to know about what had happened. But the villagers thought of confirming this since kids could make up anything and headed towards where Gorakhnath was. Gorakhnath himself was surprised as to how this had happened and he commanded the toy chauffer that had now come to life to sit next to him and continued with his chanting. When the villagers saw the toy alive it became the topic of discussion in the village. Macchendranath was also seeking alms in the same village and came to hear about this situation. It quickly came to his knowledge that it must be the effect of the sanjivani mantra. He went to where Gorakhnath was and upon seeing the little child he put his hand upon him and said ‘Son, you will be an accomplished yogi and your name will be Gahininath.’
Gorakhnath put his hands together and asked ‘Guruji, what miracle has taken place. I was only tying to make a chauffer toy for the village children but as i was making it, it started to spur into life.’
‘While you were making the toy you were still chanting the sanjivani mantra which began awakening life into the toy.’ Gorakhnath remained silent and Macchendranath added ‘Karabhanjanath has appeared in the form of this child. He had to take this incarnation which is why his birth is no ordinary.’ Now this news had spread far and wide to other villages as well and people started coming to that place to see the child. Gradually the crowd of spectators had grown at large. Gorakhnath’s sanjivani mantra practice had come to completion and Macchendranath didn’t want to stay there any longer.
Macchendranath said to Gorakhnath ‘Son, we must go from here or else there will be a crowd here everyday and we won’t be able to perform our daily rituals.’ Gorakhnath agreed. The villagers came to know about this and seemed unhappy. They wanted such divine and miraculous yogis to stay so that their village would frolic because since the day these yogis had stayed happiness was all around. People were healthy and financially blessed in their presence. They pleaded a lot to these yogis but they refused. ‘We can’t stay here any longer. It shall disrupt our meditation. But if we get an opportunity we’ll come again.’
There resided an intellectual and pious brahmin by the Madhunabh in the same village. He had a wife called Ganga. They both were very well respected by everyone. Not only in their village but among many people put together from other villages he was the most intellectual pandit. For any religious rituals he was always called upon. Since he alone performed most of the rituals he faired well from it and was financially strong. Though he was grateful for the prestigious life and its comfort he was in despair cause he had no offspring. He tried different ways but always failed. He was getting old and the hope of a child seemed impossible. Some prestigious men from the village told him about the child that the two yogis had revived from mud and said ‘If you ask these yogis for this child they will not refuse. The child is extremely beautiful and your house shall be blissful.’
The brahmin took less interest in their advice but Ganga was tempted. She had already seen the child with the other women in the village.
Ganga approached her husband,’The child is really beautiful. If we could have him our incomplete hearts will be complete.’ Under his wife’s request the brahmin agreed to meet the yogis. He alongside the men who had advised him went to meet Macchendranath. On seeing Macchendranath he joined his two hands with devotion. Another brahmin introducing Madhunabh said ‘Sadhu baba, this is our village pandit Madhunabh. He is well respected and well known for his intellectual and good deeds. But he is very unhappy because he has no children.’
Macchendranath glanced at him and understood his despair. It took him no time to read his mind and learn that he had come in hopes of getting the child that Gorakhnath had brought into life.
Macchendranath said ‘ I understand your grief pandit ji and i even know why you’ve come to me but….’
‘But what yogiraj?’
‘But can Mahunabh take care of this child well enough?’
Madhunabh replied ‘How can i not maharaj. If the desire is of a child then the child will be grown with nothing but love.’
‘My intentions were not in doubting you would not give this child enough love. What i meant was this is no ordinary child.’
One villager mocked ‘ Yes, this child has been revived from mud so how can it be ordinary.’ Macchendranath understood the villager’s mockery and said ‘ Everyone is made of this earth. This body is in itself earth. When it is put to fire after death it dissolves into the earth then what is so significant about it.’
‘What then maharaj?’
Macchendranath replied ‘ The specialty is in the soul. Whatever karma one does the soul will be the bearer of it’s fruits and will sustain it’s divineness or it’s decadence. The soul that has been granted divineness will with it’s credibility and spiritual upcoming commit to the well being of others where as the ordinary or decadent soul, let alone the well beings of others, it will not be even able to help itself.’
‘This is the incarnation of Karabhanjan Narayan. He has been created from a part of Lord Shiva which is why he is the reflecting image of Shiva himself. Therefore, though he will be raised well, much love and devotion will be expected.’
On hearing this Madhunabh was delighted and said ‘ If this is so, then I’ll be the most fortunate maharaj! I’ll do my very best to serve him with undivided love and devotion.’
Yogiraj replied ‘ Alright then. We shall accept giving you this child. Now go and make arrangements for his welcome. We’ll bring him to you.’
Panditji went along with his friends and other villagers who had stayed behind showed Macchendranath and Gorakhnath the way to his house.
With the chanting of vedic mantras pandit welcomed the child in and dressed him in the finest clothes. Macchendranath put holy ash on the forehead of Ganga enchanted by mohan mantra after which it showed it effect. Ganga was filled with maternal love and instincts and her breasts started lactating. She started breast feeding the child.
‘O brahmin couple, this child will purify your clan. In the near future he will be an accomplished yogi and will commit to the well being of all beings. This Shankaracharya Gahininath will be the student of Nivritinath.’
Madhunabh replied ‘Do not worry yogiraj. This child will be taken care of as you’ve directed us.’
Macchendranath seemed satisfied and promised to educate Gahininath on their return. The villagers with all respect bade farewell to the two yogis. They seemed a little unhappy on their departure.
- Meditation in BadrikashRam
While staying at a place it came across Macchendranath’s mind that Gorkahnath had attained all knowledge and infinite wisdom of spirituality and he had yet to learn about the knowledgeable truth about performing these rituals in time which held great significance and which was not possible without the mercy of Lord Shiva. He said to Gorakhnath ‘Son! You still have to gain the grace of Lord Shiva because without his mercy all knowledge remains incomplete.’
Gorakhnath quietly listened to his guru’s instructions, ‘If you had his mercy you would not have chanted the life elixir mantra while making the toy chauffer. Sometimes these types of incident can prove fatal.’
‘What procedure should i follow to please lord Shiva gurudev?’ Gorakhnath asked. Macchendranath replied ‘Go into the woods of BadrikashRam and meditate. There you will receive the mercy and blessings of both Shiva and Narayan.’
Taking his guru’s advice Gorakhnath paced towards BadrikashRam. Gorakhnath started meditating in the holy place of badrikashRam. He was in deep meditation for 12 years and had sacrificed food in this period. One day Lord Shiva appeared before him pleased with his devotion and asked in all delight ‘ What do you wish for o devotee? Whatever you wish for, ask.’
Gorakhnath payed obeisance and put his hands together and requested ‘ Lord! I ask you this that may my knowledge be complete and that i always have devotion for you.’
‘So be it ! Not only will your knowledge be complete but you will be acquainted with other knowledge as well.’ With this blessing Lord Shiva disappeared into the unknown. With his meditation complete he headed back to pilgrim with hopes to meet his guru Macchendranath.
- Miraculous demonstration by Kanifanath
On his way to pilgrimage Gorakhnath he reached Uttkal kingdom where he got the darshan of Lord Jagaannath. After that he reached the city of Helapattan. In those days king Gopinath used to reign Helapattan. It came to his knowledge that the king had captivated an accomplished yogi named Jaalandhar and the yogi was being mistreated. Gorakhnath was parting ways when he encountered Kanifanath. Kanifanath was the student of the nath clan’s accomplished yogi Jaalandhar. When Gorakhnath reached where Kanifanath was resting in a velvety carpet splayed over a bed. On hearing ‘Adesh’ he stood up abruptly and greeted back with the same word.
In the nath community on meeting with each other ‘Adesh’ is enunciated to greet each other. Kanifanath welcomed Gorakhnath and seated him next to him and asked for his introduction.
‘These mangoes are really sweet. If you desire I’ll have them served to you,’ Kanifanath said.
‘ Why stress yourself. I’m not that hungry. If hunger should arise we’ll see then.’ Gorakhnath replied.
‘It’s no trouble at all. The mango trees are here bearing its fruits. I’ll order my disciples right now to pick the mangoes from the tree.’ Kanifanath persisted.
‘The students too need to work hard. Why put them through that.’ on this Kanifanath replied ‘ Alright, lets leave the students out of this. With my divine knowledge I’ll bring the mangoes here. Nobody has to go anywhere.’
Kanifanath threw the enchanted holy ash with his bibhatastra mantra at the mango tree. As a result the mangoes fell from the tree. Next he with the mantra of attraction enchanted the holy ash, threw at the mangoes which started to get pulled towards them. At the arrival of the mangoes they initiated eating eat till their guts were full. But a lot of mangoes were leftover. Gorakhnath said ‘I guess it would be appropriate to reattach these leftover mangoes back to it’s tree. This way the trees will still have fruits in them and the mangoes will not go stale.’ on hearing Gorakhnath’s statement Kanifanath replied with a hint of mockery ‘What are you saying? Is it ever possible to reattach those fruit back like before?’ Gorakhnath replied with strong determination ‘ The student of an unaccomplished guru is always incomplete. If your guru had complete knowledge he would have taught you everything.’
Kanifanath riled up at this ‘ You don’t need to undermine my guru. I know how superior your guru is. So, you don’t need to say no more.’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ But he has made me knowledgeable enough that whatever i want to do i can do it in full completion.’
Kanifanath sarcastically provoked ‘Your guru is so great that he is residing in Triyarajya and indulging in lust. His greatness is no greater than a joke.’
Gorakhnath was infuriated. He said ‘ It is also no secret that your guru is in such bad condition. He has been in captivity for 10 years at Gaud Bangal under king Gopichand’s command. If he had such mystical powers and a potent teacher wouldn’t he have come out of this situation. If you want to confirm this truth go to Helapattan in the kingdom of Gopichand and see it for yourself.’
Kanifanath didn’t know what to say. He seemed a little angry and a little insulted and he was thinking of an answer to insult Gorakhnath when Gorakhnath added ‘ If you want to see the power of my guru’s knowledge then watch. If i reattach these mangoes to where it initially was will you then be assured that my guru is ebullient.’
Kanifanath boldly said ‘ If you enact then I’ll know or are you just going to jibber jabber.’
Gorakhnath didn’t like his tone but still he stayed calm and put the holy ash on the mangoes enchanting them with preranastra and life elixir mantra. Then what should happen. The mangoes at once started flying like birds and reattached itself to the trees like they were before.
This miracle was astounding to Kanifanath. He could not believe his eyes that Gorakhnath had actually done it. He regretted his mistake because the truth was Gorakhnath was way ahead superior to him in intellect and strength. He quickly asked for forgiveness.
Gorakhnath instantly replied ‘ So you see my guru’s knowledge and it’s deliverance. It is due to him that I’ve been able to reattach those fruits in those trees.’
Kanifanath politely said ‘ I’ve now learned about your potential and strength. Your knowledge is infinite. I learned in your presence that there is lot more that i have yet to learn. It is also fortunate that we met, now i know where my guru is. I’ve been searching for him for so many years but i was unable to find him.’
Gorakhnath too replied politely ‘ It has also come to my advantage. Eating these mangoes and resting a bit here, my tiredness has gone as well as I’ve found where my guru is. I too was searching for him here and there.’
This way they established a mutual respect for each other talked with warmth. At last Gorakhnath bade farewell to Kanifanath and parted ways. On his way Gorakhnath thought to himself ‘Why not go to Triyarajya to meet gurudev. I can bring him back from there since there are no alternatives.’
- Gorakhnath heads towards Triyarajya
With this thought Gorakhnath started his journey to Triyarajya. When he reached the border of Triyarajya he started thinking of a way to enter it. It seemed impossible because it was forbidden for any male to enter. Gorakhnath sat on a old stone and tried finding a way to resolve this issue. Nothing seemed to work. He sat there drowning and submerging in hopes and disappointment. At that moment he saw some beautiful women in one rath advancing towards him. Out of them one particular woman was extremely beautiful, youthful and was wearing the most beautiful clothes attire.
They all had different types of musical instruments with them which seemed that they were some musical performers. All women got down from the rath and rested next to Gorakhnath. Gorakhnath and the women exchanged glances. Then Gorakhnath asked a woman who seemed be the chief ‘where are you from and where are you headed to?’
She replied ‘We are from the kingdom of Udhar and now we are thinking of going to Triyarajya.’
‘ With what aim may i ask?’
‘To perform our musical performance.’
‘ There are no musical kalabid’
‘There are a lot. But the queen Mainakini loves uniqueness. She is very much interested in music. But since men are restricted in the kingdom women have to present these musical performances.’
Gorakhnath inquired with curiosity ‘Who are you? What do you do? And what is your name?’
‘That’s a lot of questions. But still I’m baarbadhu. My profession is to enact the art of singing and dancing. My name is Kalinga Rani. What else do you want to know?’
Gorakhnath replied ‘I’m a sadhu, Mata. I have no concern over these matter. What i meant was if you could somehow take me with you to this kingdom.”
Kalinga laughed ‘ Being a sadhu you desire to enter the kingdom of women. Observe the impact of lust, even rishi munis can’t overcome it.’
‘No Mata. I am a baal bramhachari. I only wish to see this kingdom. With that i am hopeful i will receive at least two piece of bread which will be enough to fill my appetite.’
Kalinga thought that it would come to her advantage if Gorakhnath came. he would work for the wage of just two breads. But the problem was no men were allowed into the kingdom.
She said ‘ But how will you be able to go with us with the restriction of men?’
Gorakhnath asked ‘ What is the reason that men are not allowed?’
‘It is said that the everyday Lord Hanuman comes and roars due to which any men who hears it will not live to see another day and the women conceive just on hearing the word of it. Their offspring born are females too never a male.
Gorakhnath was amused. Kalinga continued ‘ There is something about the air there that brings death to men and impregnants women.’
Gorakhnath said ‘ But I’m a yogi ascetic. What use am i to Hanuman ji? I have an remedy for this.’
‘What remedy?’ Kalinga asked.
‘ By my yogic strength i can transform myself to any form. As per the need i can transform myself into a woman in pure simplicity that even Hanumanji won’t be able to tell the difference.’
‘ But how will you stop the effect of his roar?’
‘It will by no means affect me since I’m an accomplished yogi. Without my consent no one can deliberately harm me against my will.’
‘Alright! So should i confirm you going with us?’
‘ Make me your instrumentalist . No one will second guess my presence.’
She laughed ‘Instrumentalist is that who excels in playing the instrument. Your a sadhu. How would you have the knowledge of one.’
‘ Not only can i play but i know how to sing too. If you want, try me.’
‘ Alright, lets see you perform.’
Gorakhnath started playing. He enchanted the holy ash with gandarbha vidya and put it on hid forehead and started playing all instruments one by one. After that he gave the instruments back to the women and started to sing with them altogether. Not only the women but all birds and animals listened and were mesmerized.
Kalinga was very much pleased and said ‘ Sadhu baba! You are a very good musician. Your gift of music will be really appreciated by the queen Mainakini and you will be rewarded generously. You can come with us but what is your name?’
Trying to hide his identity Gorakhnath replied ‘Mata! I have no special name in this ashRam but everybody else around here calls me sadhu. But yes in previous ashRam i am called Purvadam.’
Kalinga was in all means satisfied on taking Gorakhnath along as he was more than beneficial. She rode with her friends in the chariot and kept Gorakhnath in the seat of charioteer. This way charioteer was off to his place of destination.
There was a place called Chinnapatna in Triyarajya. Under Kalinga’s command the chariot was brought to a stop. It was dusk and the sun was starting to set. They got down from the rath and had their meal and started preparing for their sleep. She asked ‘Yogi! Are you going to sleep too!’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ I’m not sleepy for now. If sleep should come i shall sleep whilst sitting. What difference is it to yogis and ascetics if one is asleep or awake? They are always asleep and awake.’
This made no sense to Kalinga and she started to sleep comfortably next to her friends and snored away. But still Gorakhnath was awake. He started to think of ways to try unhooking Macchendranath out of this web. He had an idea. If Hanumanji himself was not allowed into the kingdom then it would be possible to deal with this situation to some extend.’ With this thought he made such managements that no one could enter Triyarajya. He believed that if Hanumanji should come he won’t be able to make an entry.
- Meeting with Shree Ram and Hanuman
Hanuman’s abode was Setubandh Rameshwor. He constantly served Lord Shree Ram. His arrival at Triyarajya ocurred after a nightfall. He had arrived after Gorakhnath had cast weapon spells in such a manner that no one could enter. When Hanuman tried to enter the territory of Triyarajya, he felt a jolt of bajrastha to his heart by which he was mortified and fell on the ground. Then after the sparsastra showed its instant effect. His body became non-functional and sensible to every little thing. He was bound by the attraction of the earth in such a way that all his activities soothed down. After that mohanastra was activated by which he was enthralled and its effects were as such that he couldn’t go against any kinds of activities going around which was followed by naagastra which bound him with the whip of the naagas and the prachepastra threw him body far from the territory of Triyarajya.
It took a while for Hanuman ji to come into consciousness. But he couldn’t what had happened. When he couldn’t predict the reason to this he closed his eyes and beseeched lord Shree Ram. On being called by Hanuman ji Shree Ram came to his aid. He saw the fatal condition of Hanuman and he asked what had happened. Hanuman ji explained to Shree Ram the sequence of sastras that was cast on him and said ‘Lord! What is the reason to your invincible attendant’s degradation?’
Shree Ram concentrated and saw the whole incident. He quickly unbound the weapons with his garudastra, indrastra, bibhatastra and gyanastra that was affecting Hanuman. Hanuman ji was released from this misery but feeling insulted he pleaded ‘My lord! I don’t know who was responsible for this. I feel this is the doing of some demon because no god or human can be strong enough and bold enough.’
Shree Ram said ‘ My devotee! No demon is capable enough to and no god is strong enough that they can come in your way. This kind of daring can only be done by a human.’
Hanuman ji requested once again ‘O lord! Who is this human! I will teach him a lesson for his bad deed in such a way that he’ll never think of repeating it in the near future.’
Ram ji laughed and said ‘ Hanuman! Be calm, whatever you do, do it wisely. Whoever does not think before they act will regret later. First know the strength of your opponent then think of fighting him.’
Hanuman ji replied softly ‘O Lord! Please make me acquainted with the knowledge of this opponent. Then I’ll be able to do something.’
Lord Ramchandra said solemnly ‘ Only a nath yogi can perform such miracle on earth at this time. He is the incarnation of lord Shree Hari Narayan and is the student of Macchendranath. His name at present is Gorakhnath.’
‘ Gorakhnath!’ Hanumanji said amazed ‘ the student of Macchendranath, Gorakhnath has become powerful to such an extent! Where as his guru is indulged in material enjoyment and luxury in Triyarajya. Isn’t it a surprise.’
‘ What is surprising about that ?’ Shree Ram replied ‘ There is a lot of potential in meditation. With meditation what is out of reach? Who is powerful enough to confront a hermit.’
Hanumanji said ‘ There are numerous sadhak, upasak, haribhaktas etc in existence, what makes him outstanding from these other yogis.’
Shree Ram replied ‘ Hanuman, it is what it is. But his intentions were not to insult you. His only aim is to take Macchendranath out of the quicksand of Triyarajya. That is why he has demonstrated such miracle so that you would acknowledge his intentions in the right manner.’
With bibasta Hanuman ji replied ‘ But Lord! Macchendranath is in Triyarajya with the queen Mainakini under my oath. I had directed Mainakini to serve him. If Macchendranath should leave now, it is inevitable that problems should arise. ‘
Shree Ram replied ‘What can be done now? Gorakhnath has already made up his mind to take him back with him.’
Hanuman ji said ‘Lord! If you could make him understand then we could be successful in our mission. So would you be kind enough to go there with me.’
‘How will we go there?’
‘We need to have some kind of disguise. In our true forms it will be difficult to get any work done.’
‘ If we are to disguise ourselves, the disguise of brahmins will be best suited,’ Shree Ram replied.
Hanuman ji approved the idea of Shree Ram and both transformed themselves into brahmins and headed for Chinnapattan in a hurry. When they reached Chinnapattan, Gorakhnath was sitting upright in padmasan(lotus posture) while Kalinga snored away next to her sleeping friends. It was beyond midnight and silence prevailed all around. At such hour two brahmins were approaching Gorakhnath. This came as a surprise to Gorakhnath. For one it was the latest hour of the night and secondly he had arranged with his powers the prohibition of any other person into Triyarajya. So, in what ways had they made their entry possible. Still, noticing the two brahmins advancing, he got up and welcomed them and respectfully seated them next to him and inquired ‘Who are you and where have you come from? What is your intention that brings you to me at this time of night? Please be kind enough to answer my queries.’
‘ We’ve come here with an important task. If you promise us that you will fulfill it for us then we’ll tell you the truth in detail.’
Hearing this Gorakhnath became a bit doubtful. He thought that there surely is a reason to these brahmins coming to him and it would prove fatal on his side promising them without knowing the reason behind it. I have no idea who they are or what they want. Many gods and demons disguise likewise and lurks around. Mostly it’s ghosts, pret and pisach usually active at night time. But demons and ghosts cannot confront me. So it is most likely that one of the gods is impersonating a brahmin.
With this thought he said ‘ Firstly, i can only think of promising you unless you give me your introduction. At this point i cannot conclude anything.’
Shree Ram was hoping that Gorakhnath would ask for his introduction. He said ‘ Yogiraj! I am Ram and this is my devotee Hanuman.’
Gorakhnath paid his reverence at both their feet and with great joy he said ‘ Lord! I have such a fortunate fate that i could meet you. i am just a common ascetic human and you are the Lord of all three lokas. I bow myself to your feet again and again.’
‘ Yogiswor! Now that I’ve introduced myself tell me are you willing to fulfill the task that i was referring to?’
‘Before i promise anything i would like to know the reason behind it. Just tell me what i should do.’
Shree Ram replied ‘Alright I’ll explain everything to you. Hanuman! Tell yogiraj the details.’
Hanuman said ‘Yogi! It has come to my attention that Macchendranath is your guru. You are making efforts to take him away from Triyarajya. But Macchendranath is in Triyarajya as per my will, so let him stay here.’
Gorakhnath quickly answered ‘Hanuman ji! I know i should take your advice without a doubt but tell me is it appropriate that i leave my gurudev stranded in his indulgence of worldly pleasures. Isn’t this going to effect his yog sadhana and don’t you think this indulgence of his will be the reason that the nath clan will be scorned in the world?’
Hanumanji started contemplating when Gorakhnath added ‘ Son of Anjani! I am willing to take my guruji out of here. You should help me in this task. If you do not agree it’s upto you but i have to do this.’
Hanumanji said with a little roughness ‘ But Gorakhnath! You can’t do this.’
Gorakhnath too stubbornly said ‘I will surely do it Hanuman ji! All the power in the world cannot stop me. I will have to do this.’
Hanuman said screaming ‘ Then you’ll have to fight me. Nobody in this entire world can go against my will.’
Gorakhnath still maintained calmness in his voice and yet maintained his determination ‘ Hanumanji! If I’m forced into fighting then that too i shall do.’
Hanuman ji was infuriated but Shree Ram made him understand ‘Hanuman! Nothing can be accomplished with anger. It is necessary that you use your wits. Tell me did Mainakini ask you for the happiness of having a husband for eternity?’
Hanumanji became calm and replied with a no. Shree Ram asked again ‘ Did you order Macchendranath to stay in Triyarajya forever.’ Hanumanji replied with a no again.
‘ Then why should be angry? Macchendranath has followed your command for a long time but he is not bound in a promise to forever do so. So leave the choice upon Macchendranath if he wishes to leave with Gorakhnath or not. Even if Gorakhnath becomes successful in his attempts no one will be able to harm what you’ve promised.’
Hanumanji calmed down. But still he seemed dissatisfied and said ‘Then what my lord. Don’t i have any responsibilities any more.’
Ramji laughed ‘ Yes you still have some responsibility to undergo. But it is only this that you alert Macchendranath. Give Mainakini the information that Gorakhnath has already made his appearance in Triyarajya and he has come to take Macchendranath with him.’
Hanumanji obediently followed Shree Ram ji’s command. Gorakhnath also thought of lord Ram’s strategy to be beneficial for him. He bowed at the feet of both Shree Ram and Hanuman ji and apologized for his behaviour. Ramji started to stand up. Seeing this Hanumanji quickly got up and Gorakhnath too showing his reverence stood up. After that Ramji disappeared. Hanuman ji then left for Triyarajya towards Mainikini’s castle. It was past midnight. The castle was in pin drop silence. In the name of light only a few dhrit ke deepak was burning. The castle doors were closed. The attendants were no where to be seen. But Hanumanji had an over all swiftness in his pace. He took a minute form and reached Mainakini’s private castle. Mainakini was in deep sleep. He tried waking her up by all means but couldn’t wake her up. When nothing worked he started shaking her up. She got up abruptly and seeing Hanumanji in front of her she bowed to him. She quickly had Hanuman ji seated in a privileged seat and putting her hands together she said ‘ lord! What is your provision on arriving at this time of night?’
‘ When i sense trouble coming towards my devotees then i have to take take care of them Mainakini.’
She seemed a bit frightened and said ‘ What problem am i going to face, my lord?’
‘Mainakini! It is not as such that it will bring you any sorts of physical harm. But you will go through mental trouble.’
‘ Please be discreet. It is hard to believe that being under your protection i have to go through any kind of trouble. Please will you be kind to inform me what is going to happen right now because hearing what you are saying i can’t stop but be filled with doubts and depression more and more.’
Hanuman ji cleared her over this matter ‘On your prayer i told you that your rati kamana will be fulfilled by Macchendranath. He has been staying with you for twelve years based on this and you also have a son from him but..’
Mainakini doubts grew and said ‘ But what lord! Please tell me the rest.’
Hanumanji replied ‘The student of Macchendranath, Gorakhnath is very powerful and his powers are beyond measure. Nobody can confront him. He has learned everything from Macchendranath by the competence of which he can create a whole new world and destroy the persisting world. He has come here to take Macchendranath back and he will take him back.’
Mainakini became very worried. She grabbed onto Hanuman ji’s feet and said ‘ Lord! Please think of a way to keep Macchendranath here.’
He replied ‘ He knows every ways to deal with any kind of ordeal you present towards him. So, nothing you do is going to change anything.’
‘ Then please make him understand. I’m sure he will not deny you.’
‘He doesn’t listen to anybody. Even Shree Ram tried to talk him into this but he has made up his mind to take his guru back.’
‘Then what should be done Hanuman ji?’
He said ‘ There is only one way. You can through Triya charitra keep Macchendranath under your spell. It can work. If not Gorakhnath will succeed in taking back Macchendranath.’
Before Mainakini could say anything Hanumanji vanished into thin air. she sat there in deep thoughts devastated.
- Wake up Macchendra! Gorakh’s here
The night had ended. The swetata was pervading the sky indicating the arrival of dawn. Kalinga and her friends woke up from their sleep. On waking up she saw Gorakhnath in padmasan engorged in deep meditation. They performed their morning rituals and started getting ready. Gorakhnath was ready too. After everyone was ready they seated themselves in the charoit and Gorakhnath had himself seated in the charioteer’s seat and started the ride. They made their way from Chinnapattan to a place called Shringamund of the Triyarajya. The chariot was halted at a small distance away from the main gate of the kingdom. They aborted the chariot. Kalinga requested Gorakhnath ‘Sadhu baba! You should quickly transform yourself or else it will create a greater problem for us.’
In agreement to their plea he with the help of his yog vidya transformed himself into a woman. Seeing this Kalinga was amazed and at the same time pleased. She said ‘ What a beautiful transformation. It is possible that there is none even in Triyarajya who can have such beautiful and charming attributes as you.’
Gorakhnath laughed. Kalinga sent one of her attendant to Mainakini’s castle who gracefully showed her respect as per the rules of the kingdom and requested the queen who was throned next to Macchendranath ‘ Your Highness! Our chief Kalinga would like to perform for you. If your permission is granted, she would like to present herself.’
Although the queen was mentally stressed, she approved for it thinking it will lighten her up. The attendant returned to Kalinga with the information of approval and said ‘ The queen seems to be quiet upset. It will be wise to perform and entertain her as quickly as possible.’ Kalinga and her friends along side a woman disguised Gorakhnath reached the castle. Mainakini sat on a throne which was embedded with precious gems and next to her was seated Macchendranath dressed in royal attire. All gave their due respect. After that Kalinga’s friends started assembling their instruments. Gorakhnath who was disguised as a woman too started playing his mridanga. When it was time to sing, Kalinga started to hum a melodious song. Everybody was drawn to Kalinga’s song. After singing a while Kalinga stopped to perform her dance. Her dance was highly appreciated by everyone. Then everybody’s attention went to the special mridanga playing. It’s melody was extraordinary that even the queen was mesmerized but this came as a mental anxiousness to Macchendranath. It seemed that the melody being born out of the mridanga was pronouncing some words sparsely. Suddenly the words were clear to Macchendranath’s ears which said ‘Wake up Macchendra! Gorakh’s here!’ His anxiety started growing. It was difficult even to stay still on his throne. He started moving here and there and stood and sat which was surprising to Mainakini and she asked ‘ I feel this performance is making you uncomfortable. If you do not wish to see it, should i tell them to stop?’
‘No, not anxious but i have come to my senses.’
‘ I do not understand what you mean’, the queen asked with curiosity.
‘ Try to understand my queen! Listen to what the mridanga is saying.’
‘ Please tell me what it is that i do not understand. All i can understand is that a strange melody unfolds from the mridanga which is completely new to my hearing.’
‘ The melody clearly states Awake up Macchendra, Gorakh’s here. Listen to it intently and you will understand.’
Mainakini listened intently and heard the announcement in its utmost clarity. She said ‘ Yes, the melody is saying those words but what does it mean?’
Macchendranath replied ‘ The meaning is clear. Gorakhnath’s here and i guess i have to return back with him.’
Mainakini was already familiar to this. She was warned by Hanumanji and now she was sure that Gorakhnath had already made his way to Triyarajya and the one playing the mridanga was none other than Gorakhnath himself disguised as a woman. To test if what she suspected were true she asked every musician to play the mridanga but not one were successful in creating the same melody. She once again gave the disguised Gorakhnath the mridanga and commanded Gorakhnath to play it. Once he started playing the same melody was revised ‘ Wake up Macchendra! Gorakh’s here!’ she knew now this was Gorakhnath. She rewarded Kalinga and rest of her group on completion of their performance and bade them farewell but asked the mridanga playing Gorakhnath to stay.
Kalinga requested ‘ Your Highness! Do not ask her to stay or else our business will run out because she is one of the best mridanga player.’
Mainakini replied ‘ But the one that you are referring to as a woman is a man. There is a prohibition on the entry of men in Triyarajya and yet you’ve harbored one which makes you guilty. And on top of that disguising a man as a woman and bringing him into the kingdom is a treason. But i shall forgive you for all that is since I’ve been awed by your performances and let you go. But let the one who is disguised be here. Hearing the queen’s grave speech Kalinga and her friends left. They were surely disheartened at Gorakhnath being caught.
- Meeting with Macchendranath
But Gorakhnath was neither caught nor did anyone had the capability to catch him. He wanted Mainakini to know about him so that he would get an opportunity to make conversation with his gurudev. Mainakini went to her enclosed room and told her attendant to bring the disguised Gorakhnath. When Gorakhnath got there Mainakini said ‘ Can you give me your real introduction?’
‘Surely!’ Gorakhnath replied and transformed himself to his true identity. He immediately transformed from a woman to a man and said ‘ Your Highness! My true identity is this. My name is Gorakhnath. I am the student of yogiraj Macchendranath. Due to the prohibition of any men entering Triyarajya i had to take this form of a woman to enter.’
‘What is the reason behind your arrival?’
‘ Guruji has spent 12 years here with you. Now i wish to take him back with me.’
‘I will let you meet him and its upto you and him to decide. I think both of you should talk over this issue.’
She took Gorakhnath with her towards Macchendranath and said ‘ This is your disciple who wishes to meet you.’
Gorakhnath saw Macchendranath laying on a precious gem studded velvety bed resting comfortably and he bowed down on Macchendrantah’s feet. Macchendranath hugged him dearly and blessed him and asked to take a seat. Macchendranath asked about his well being on which Gorakhnath filled him in about the activities that he had endevoured over the twelve years. He gave an informed detail on how he had followed Macchendranath’s instructions and for twelve years meditated to impress lord Shiva. He gave all the information including Jaalandher’s imprisonment to meeting with Kanifanath and achieving the information on Macchendranath’s whereabouts. He even talked about his meeting with Kalinga, Shree Ramchandra and Hanumanji.
Hearing everything Macchendranath showed his appreciation towards Gorakhnath. With this Gorakhnath humbly pleaded ‘ Gurudev this all has been possible only because of you. You have made me so deserving and capable that i can never fail in anything i do. In whatever i do your glory is hidden in it.’
Macchendranath silently kept listening to what Gorakhnath had to say. Gorakhnath continued ‘ Guruji! You are profound and an accomplished yogi. It came as a surprise to me to see you in such indulgence with the worldly pleasures with the women of Triyarajya. It has become a topic of discussion since it has crossed the line of discipline in the nath clan.’
Gorakhnath’s statement seemed to make Macchendranath a little embarrassed and uneasy and slowly replied ‘ Son Gorakhnath! What you’ve said is true. But i am also bound here under certain circumstance.’
Gorakhnath asked ‘ Do tell me about your difficulty gurudev.’ Macchendranath replied ‘After giving you the order to go to the journey to Badrikashram i myself had embarked upon a pilgrimous journey. But on my way in Setubandh Rameshwor i ran into Hanuman ji who forced me to come here. Under his command i have been staying here for 12 years.’
Gorakhnath requested ‘ Then please make arrangements to go away from here gurudev! You’ve very well fulfilled your promise and obeyed Hanuman ji. Now you are no longer bound by promises.’
Macchendranath replied ‘ I am ready for it. But you must convince Mainakini and make her agree. Then there will be no obstacle for me.’
Gorakhnath started to think on what should be done. On the other, Macchendranath wished on abandoning Triyarajya. But they couldn’t find a way. Meanwhile queen Mainakini was fidgeting with the doubt that Macchendranath would leave Triyarajya. She started thinking what if Gorakhnath was too bewitched into staying in Triyarajya then her dilemma would uplift. She told her most beautiful friend to please Gorakhnath. On her command she went to Gorakhnath and was willing to serve him. Seeing this Gorakhnath said ‘I do not make women do kind of work for me.’
The beautiful woman replied ‘ But there are no men here. Besides women, who is going to serve you?’
Gorakhnath replied ‘I do not expect any kind of help from anyone for my work. I like doing my own work by myself. Even if there were men here i would not let them serve me.’ That woman attempted in all her might to please Gorakhnath. She danced in front of Gorakhnath in half nakedness but Gorakhnath did not even look at her once. At last she gave up and went to Mainakini and said ‘Your Highness! It is impossible to entice him. I tried many ways to entice him but nothing worked.’ What could Mainakini do but stay quiet. It was even beyond her understanding on what should be done.
- The death and rebirth of Meenanath
Mainakini was blessed with a son from Macchendranath. His name was Meenanath. She loved him so much that she would start fretting if he was out of her sight even for a second. One day Macchendranath, Gorakhnath, Meenanath and Mainakini all were sitting together when Macchendranath said ‘ Gorakhnath! Meenanath has not bathed in days since he was sick with fever. Now that his health has returned it is necessary that he takes a bath. It would be better if you take him to the river side and give him a good wash.’
Gorakhnath understood his guru’s intentions. He wanted to associate a miracle. He understood this too that whatever miracle was going to take place the credit would go to none other than him. So he took Meenanath to the river bank. Under circumstances of concluding his miracle, he picked up Meenanath by his legs. He started crying but Gorakhnath took no notice. He started thrashing Meenanath on a huge stone similar to the way a clothe washer thrashes clothes to clean. Though this strategy was viable to cleaning clothes it was life perishing to a human. Within two to three thrashes Meenanath lost his life. After that Gorakhnath started cleansing Meenanath’s skin rubbing it with his hands. A lot excreted from the inside by this and his insides became clean. He brought the lifeless washed Meenanath to Mainakini’s sayankaksh and left it on the roof to dry. On seeing Gorakhnath, Macchendranath asked ‘ Gorakhnath! Where is Meenanath?’
‘You asked me to clean him properly. That is why i have bathed him and cleaned him properly and left his pelt to dry on the roof.’ Macchendranath saw through his divine power that Meenanath had already died. Mainakini too was aghast on hearing Gorakhnath’s words. She went to the roof with Macchendranath. Whatever Gorakhnath had said was present in front of them. The outer pelt of Meenanath’s body was lying there. Mainakini was devastated at the sight of this and couldn’t stop crying. Eventually coming over her devastation she heard Macchendranath say ‘ You evil man! Heartless man! You killed this child. Tell me what wrong had this innocent child done to you that you took his life away.’
Mainakini cried out ‘ Not only did he take his life he has destroyed every bits of his organs. There is nothing left in him.’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ Guruji! You yourself gave me the order to have him washed properly. I was just obeying what you had told me to do. How can you blame me for this?’
Macchendranath showed his anger ‘ You idiot! To bathe him doesn’t mean that you take his life. Out of jealousy you’ve done something so horrible that it has added more to our grief.’
Mainakini said ‘ You used to say that Gorakhnath is highly intellectual, righteous and virtuous in nature. But out of enmity he has killed our son. I do not understand what i should do now.’
Gorakhnath politely said ‘ Mata! Neither anyone kills anyone nor anyone gets killed by anyone. The soul is immortal. Therefore it is unnecessary to moan over his death.’
Machendranath said ‘ You moron! Now you’re trying to impart wisdom. Even after murdering a child you’re pretending to be wise.’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ Gurudev! You are wisest of the wise and a mahayogi. You had said it yourself that the soul is immortal. And you had also given me this advice that the world is destructible and it never sustains. Everyone born into this world dies so no one should moan over them.’
Macchendranath patiently replied ‘ But that advice does not mean that you go and murder the innocent. Now you tell me how am i going to live without Meenanath?’
Mainakini added ‘ How can i live too. Without Meenanath nothing seems alright. Gorakhnath! Now you tell me what should i do?’
Gorakhnath solemnly replied ‘ Now what can be done mata! He had to die so he died. You can punish me if you want.’
Macchendranath said ‘ Gorakhnath! You have the power in you to revive Meenanath. It is my command that you revive Meenanath right away.’
With life elixir mantra Gorakhnath enchanted the holy ash and sprinkled over Meenanath’s pelt. After that what was to happen but a 108 Meenanath come into life altogether at once. Their appearances were exactly alike. Mainakini was shocked to see 108 Meenanath. She could not differentiate on which Meenanath was her son. Gorakhnath said ‘ Mata! I have presented towards you these many Meenanaths. Please select out your son.’
Mainakini replied ‘ You seem to be a great illusionist. Undo your illusion. All i want is my Meenanath. What will i do with all of these?’
Gorakhnath replied ‘When you can’t even identify your own son how can you say he is yours. When someone is yours how come he doesn’t come to your identification.’
Mainakini grew serious. She said ‘ You speak the truth son! But this does not stop my craving for Meenanath. You are a true conjurer. Please show me mercy and give me back my Meenanath.’ Gorakhnath ceased his miracle and gave the authentic Meenanath back to Mainakini. Mainakini was very impressed by this and started seeing Gorakhnath with a new found respect.
Gorakhnath said softly ‘ Mata! Please do this much that there are no more obstacles for me to take my guru back. Actually it is for the best that he leaves because him staying here is creating obstacles in the path of preaching.’
Mainakini understood that Gorakhnath was an enlightened yogi and was well aware that he will surely take Macchendranath with him so it was impossible to cause any interference. Finally she caved ‘ Alright son! You can take him but you need to wait a year for it. You’ll have to stay here till then.’
Gorakhnath said ‘ One year is a pretty long duration. But i do not want to dissatisfy you so we’ll stay for only six months.’
Mainakini seemed satisfied with this and headed towards her private vicinity. Guru and his disciple were left alone. Macchendranath said ‘ This was an effective way to disillusion Mainakini’s attachment. Now we can both depart from here easily without any hindrances.’
Gorakhnath inquired ‘ Gurudev! You sent me and Meenanath to the river bank. On returning with his dead body why were you mourning over him?’
Gurudev replied ‘ It seemed necessary to bring Mainakini out of this illusion. You have done accordingly to what i had hoped from you. You are even more deserving of praise.’
- Departure of guru and disciple from Triyarajya
If days are filled with bliss then it does not take long to overcome six months. As the day of departing was nearing so was Mainakini’s depression growing. Inevitably the day came and her anxiety seemed to have reached the extreme. She kept crying as she bade goodbye. She keeping her calm under her suppressed grief asked ‘ Will Meenanath stay here with me or will he go along with you?’
Macchendrantah replied ‘ Whatever you wish shall be done.’
Mainakini said ‘ The curse that your father Upariksha Basu had cast will uplift in six months. After that i’ll have to return back to heaven. In such situation how will Meenanath stay here in Triyarajya alone because up until now your presence could not harm Meenanath from the roar of Hanumanji. But it will find its effect and he won’t survive after you leave. So i feel it will be for the best that you take him with you.’
‘ Then it is decided that we take Meenanath with us.’
Mainakini started to prepare Meenanath to leave. In Macchendranath’s bag she kept his clothes and a brick of gold. When it was time to leave, Gorakhnath lead the way. Then after Macchendranath followed and said to his son ‘ Meenanath! Its time to leave.’
Meenanath obediently followed his father. Mainakini held Meenanath close to her heart and then bade them farewell with tears in her eyes. When the three naths exit the castle Mainakini along side her attendants and friends followed them out. As well as all the women subjects of Triyarajya followed them on their way out with tears streaming down their eyes and watched until the three naths were out of their sight. After that they returned to their homes unpleasantly. Mainakini and her friends returned to their castle and cried for some time. Her friends consoled Mainakini to be patient but she couldn’t hod her tears. She was unhappy that now both her husband and son had gone and she was worried on how her days would go by. Seeing her in such depression Upariksha Bashu mounted on his craft up in the sky said ‘ Mainakini! Why are you grieving. Who are you? Try to recognize yourself. You were cursed to stay in this world but your stay here is soon going to be terminated. Eventually you’ll return to heaven.’
Hearing this Mainakini became a little content. It took her a few days still before she could be normal again. It was difficult departing from her son and husband so her next 6 months seemed difficult as well. Later the duration of her stay had met its end on the uplifting of the curse and she went back to heaven.
- The administration of wealth
Macchendranath, Gorakhnath and Meenanath started their way to pilgrimage. They went to kingdom of Tailang and bathed in Godavari and journeyed to many other places before they reached the Chir forest in Garvagiri. The mountain top of Garvagiri was the vicinity of the great rishi Balmiki. The trail was extremely difficult to venture and the paths were mostly crooked and bent which made it even more stressful. It was said that thieves and ruffians lurked in those mountains. The forests were indeed dangerous but the three naths seemed to stride the hill with utmost fearlessness and effortlessly. But among them Macchendranath seemed restless. He was fearing that some thief or dakoit would steal his gold brick. Gorakhnath had no knowledge of the gold brick. Macchendranath would frequently ask Gorakhnath to stay put with him and ask if there were any thieves or ruffians around. This would bring laughter to Gorakhnath and he would say ‘ Even if there were any what would they possibly gain from us gurudev! Everybody knows that sadhus- sanyasis, yogis- yatiyos possess nothing of that sort that can be stolen. They only want our blessings.’
Macchendranath was silent. After a while he said ‘ Son Gorakhnath! Be careful and keep yourself alert! I just hope no evil human would cause us harm.’
Gorakhnath was a little startled by this. He doubtfully asked ‘ What is the matter gurudev! Do you have some wealth with you. And even if you have there is none who can confront us. Our yog vidhya is unbeatable in which you are even more accomplished. Why do you fear anyone trying to intimidate you?’
Macchendranath replied ‘ Son! When we left for Triyarajya Mainakini kept a gold brick in my bag and said it will come to my aid in time of need. From then i’ve been carrying this around safely. I was hoping on selling this and with it organize a feast for the sadhus and ascetics.
Gorakhnath was even more astonished. ‘Gurudev! I had no idea that the effects of Triyarajya has affected you to such an extent. You are untouched by worldly attachments, an ascetic and a supreme sacrificer. You can never have such attachment to wealth.’
Macchendranath replied ‘ Son! How could i defy Mainakini? Even a quarter can come handy while this is a gold brick.’
Gorakhnath said once again ‘ You are unnecessarily taking on this hindrance guruji! Only your wish is enough to bring forth numerous mountains of gold let alone this gold brick. Leave this materialistic attachments or else you’ll get deeper and deeper into this mess.’
‘ Well! Since this god is already in my possession why not do something that will bring it to good use?’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ Wealth is the roots to all evil. Until and unless we don’t sacrifice it, it is useless to call ourselves yogi and ascetics. Which is why i recommend that you throw it out of your bag. Then after you won’t feel any fear or dread.’
Macchendranath said ‘ I wish to give a feast to the sadhus. Where shall i find such money for that?’
Gorakhnath was a little unhappy at his guru’s statement. With his yogic power he turned a parchment of the hill into gold. After that he said ‘ See this is all gold. From this million of gold bricks can be created let alone one. From this you can gain gold as per your necessity.’
Macchendranath was rather pleased by this and threw the god brick which was under his possession. Consequently Gorakhnath changed the color of the gold brick and the golden parchment of the hill by his powers. Holding his hands Gorakhnath paced towards the mountain top of Garvagiri and rested in Balmiki ashram. Meenanath was accompanying them. At that opportunity he politely requested ‘ Gurudev! If you wish should we manage the feast here?’
Macchendranath replied ‘ No sadhus or ascetics dare come to this terrifying forest neither will it be possible to manage a feast in here. For this we’ll have to search for other options.’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ I don’t think this place is any less suitable gurudev! The only thing delayed is your command. Or else every rishi muni, sadhus-sanyashis, yogi- yati, gods and goddesses, yaksh, kinnar, gandarv and many other can grant their presence.’
On hearing Gorakhnath’s firm belief Macchendranath gave his acceptance. Gorakhnath threw the enchanted holy ash with gandarvastra and into the sky after which one gardarva seemed to descend down from the sky. He joined his hands together and asked ‘ I’m Chitrasen maharaj! What is your wish?’
Gorakhnath said ‘ My gurudev wants to organize a big festive and feast here. I want you to invite all the sadhus-sanyashis, yogi- yati, gods and goddesses, yaksh, kinnar, gandarv present in this world. Also i would like you to make such arrangements that there is a suitable arena for the accommodation and spiritual preaching and the food is prepared properly. These errands of giving invites, accommodating and serving them will be dependent on you. There should be no compromising in preparation.’
Giving his word Chitrasen parted ways. Under his command all the other gandarvs gave the invitation to reach Garvagiri to all the rishi munis, yogis-yatis,tapaswees and gods and goddesses in due time. On the other hand Chitrasen’s other helpers met with Bishwakarma and together worked to provide a place for the guests to stay. The responsibility of rationing for the feast also fell upon them. In a few moment all duties had met their end. The ambiance seemed to be of that of some big festival. Every invitees arrived in punctuality. Even the guru of gods Brihaspati had arrived along with Sukracharya, Vyas, Bashist, Bamdev, Vrigu, Kapil Yagyawalkya, Saubhari, Dattatreya, Hareet and Atri Chyewan.
Macchendranath saw that the feast was attended by Indra and auspicious gods Shiva, Bramha and Vishnu. Macchendranath’s father Uparikchya Bashu had also come together in the feast that his son had organized. On Macchendranath’s command, Madhunabh and Gahininath also had the opportunity to attend. Seeing them Macchendranath was very much pleased. He blessed Gahininath.
When lord Shiva and all other gods were seated, Macchendranath brought forth Gahininath and stood him up before them and said ‘ Lord! This child’s existence has taken place out of playfulness. When the village children pleaded Gorakhnath to make them a chauffeur out of clay, he initiated making one while still practicing life elixir mantra due to which the circulation of life took place within it. We have given him the name Gahininath. He is the incarnation of Karbhanjannath. Please be merciful to bless him.’ At that time all the gods and goddesses gave him their blessing except for lord Shiva who said ‘ Bhaktaraaj! In time, my incarnation will be of Nivitrinath. Then after i will make him knowledgeable and give him my blessings.’
Hearing this everyone were happy and bowed to lord shiva. All rishi munis placed their devotion to the trinity with the chanting of shruti mantra. The vicinity for accommodation and spiritual preaching had all adequacy under the supervision of Biswakarma which proved very auspicious. It seemed that they were sheltered in a beautiful and fancy city. The arrival of pilgrims and the result of rivers and lakes the place was even more brightened. Rishis and adepts had taken over the responsibility of preparing food and they had prepared the most delicious of dishes. Everyone who had arrived were fully satisfied and they all praised both the guru and disciple. After the meal, Kuber donated to all. Clothes, god coins etc were being given. This ceremony continued for one month. All that arrived were fully satisfied by the hosting. When the ceremony ended everyone returned to their respective vicinity. With Gorakhnath’s consent, Macchendranath sent Meenanath back to his mother Mainakini in heaven. After Mainakini’s curse had uplifted she had gone back to heaven and once again had come to her actual form of that of a nymph. In heaven, Mainakini was known by the name Tilotma. When Macchendranath’s father Uparikchya Basu was about to leave, Macchendranath took Meenanath towards him and with both hands together he pleaded ‘ I am not deserving of showing my gratitude towards your mercy. But still bowing my head before you i am biding you farewell. With this i would like to ask you one more favor. Tilotma is in heaven. Please take this child to her. With her he can live peacefully. When Indra will perform a yagya, then will i come to meet.’
Uparikchya Basu accepted this favor and took Meenanth back to his mother. On the other, Macchendranath had asked Madhunabh and Gahininath to stay a while. He taught Gahininath all the vidyas and knowledge and sent them back to their home. After staying in Madhunabh’s house for a number of years, Gahininath started his penance in Bhramhagiri near a place called Trambyak whereas lord Shiva in his incarnated Navritinath form taught Gahininath. Macchendranath on the other hand decided to stay in Garvagiri and meditate. Knowing his guru’s intentions Gorakhnath requested with utmost politeness ‘ Guruji! If you will, may i embark upon a pilgrimous journey?’
- Meeting with king Bhartihari
After receiving the permission of Macchendranath, Gorakhnath ventured on his journey to various pilgrimage and reached Girinaar hill which was the abode of the great yogiraj Dattatreya. Gorakhnath went towards him and bowed down on his feet. Dattatreya gave him his blessing and gestured him to sit. After being seated Gorakhnath gave all the accounts related to Macchendranath and others that had occurred till present date. This way the conversation went on. While conversing Dattatreya said to Gorakhnath ‘ Gorakhnath! You must have heard of Awonti nagari. The king Bhartihari of that place has been sitting in a crematory ground for twelve years repetitively saying ‘Pingala Pingala’. He is surely deserving of your grace.’
Gorakhnath asked ‘Who is this Pingala my lord?’
He replied ‘ She was the beloved wife of the king. She died twelve years ago. Her death has affected the king with such misery and pain that day and night, without food and water, never resting he just sits there day and night repeating her name.’
Gorakhnath asked ‘ Then, what is your wish that i am to fulfill?’
Dattatreya replied ‘ You must go there and do something that will set him free from this attachment.’
‘As you command.’ with this Gorakhnath enchanted the bhasma with vyanastra manta and then put it on his forehead. With its mystical powers Gorakhnath reached the crematory grounds of Awontikapuri in no time. On the grounds of the crematory place king Bhartihari was still chanting ‘Pingala Pingala’. Gorakhnath started to contemplate on a strategy as to how to break his attachment. He thought of a clever idea and went to the town and bought a clay pot. He brought it to the cremation ground and thrashed it hard on the earth and broke it. Then he collected all the broken pieces and sat on the ground and started screaming out ‘ pot pot’. The sound of his cry were very intense and elegiac before which Bhartihari’s voice was suppressed. Bhartihari could not understand the ordeal. He thought that this man also must have had lost someone dear to him that has caused him to cry out to such extent. He couldn’t hold it. So he went towards where Gorakhnath was seated and consolingly said ‘ Why are you crying like this?’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ Can’t you see, my clay pot has broke. Now where will i get it?’
Bhartihari laughed and said ‘ You are crying so much over an ordinary clay pot. You seem to be a yogi and an intellect. This does not suit you.’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ Yogi, ascetic, siddha, santa, manushya, intellect or an idiot whoever one is, it is natural that they mourn upon the departure of their beloved.’ Saying this, Gorakhnath once again started crying out. The king tried to make him understand ‘ You are crying over nothing. You can get another clay pot exactly like this one from the potter.’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ Raajan! You have been whining over a clay made queen for over twelve years, then why is it astonishing to you when i pine over my clay pot?’
The king replied ‘ How can you compare the queen to a pot? The queen was unattainable and the pot accessible.’
He replied ‘ Raajan! You can find many that is similar to your queen but to find a pot exactly like this and made of this very clay anywhere is impossible.’
The king said ‘ What are you saying yogi? There is not even one in this world that is as my Pingala was.’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ Raajan! The one like your Pingala are in millions in this world. See it for yourself.’
- Appearances of the many Pingalas
Bhartihari saw around him that there were many Pingalas standing, surrounding him. They must have been millions in number. On seeing the king standing in total shock Gorakhnath said ‘ From these whoever your Pingala is, you can go talk to her.’ But they were exactly alike and they were even more unseparable as they had the same clothes on. In no ways could the real Pingala be identified so how could the king talk to her. The king was even more astonished seeing that the many Pingalas themselves were saying something to him. One of them started staying about the private incidents about their married life. The king was baffled with the thought that were all the Pingalas aware of their personal details. To remove his doubts he started asking different private and personal questions. They were all correctly answered. The king was sure that the Pingalas were all the various forms of his one Pingala.
The Pingalas said to the king ‘ Maharaj! Let go of your despair. Humans are not immortals, they have to die one way or the other. It’s just a matter of time. Some die before some after. We too had to die at some time. Even if we had survived how long would we, maybe ten, twenty, fifty to a max of a hundred years. But still we would have to meet the inevitable death. This way in this world when death is an ultimate truth why is there any need to be mournful. So it is better to sacrifice such attachment or else you will remain caught the the cycle of life and death.’
Bhartihari kept listening as the Pingalas continued ‘ O Raajan! If you want the liberation of your soul then keep your perseverance in the devotion of the lord. Near you stands the absolute adept yogeshwor Gorakhnath. Take refuge in his guidance and be attain nirvana. He will show you the way to detach oneself from the cycle of life and death.’
Saying this the Pingalas disappeared. A light of enlightenment spread in his inner conscience and he was detached from every worldly attachments. He was going to bow down to the feet of Gorakhnath, but Gorakhnath stepped back and said ‘ Raajan! You are the receiver of the mercy of the lord Dattatreya. My guru Macchendranath too is his disciple. That is why i will respect you as my elder guru brother.’
Seeing the king in silence Gorakhnath added ‘ Raajan! Make sure of what you decide. If you want to reign over the kingdom in all happiness with the company of your queen Pingala next to you then I’ll think of a way to make it happen. Or else if you are interested in asceticism then do tell.’
Bhartihari replied ‘ Yogiraj! It is because of you that i saw the million Pingalas and heard to what they had to say. Your this power is due to yog and i have understood the true nature of this power. Now all my worldly attachments has been fully muted. Which is why i would like to gain the knowledge of yog. So, will you be kind to take me to Dattratreya.’
Gorakhnath agreed to take the king to Dattatreya. After that the king took Gorakhnath to his kingdom where his elder brother Vikramraj welcomed Gorakhnath will great respect and love. At that time Vikramraj was taking care of all the royal activities. He was really pleased at the thought that Bhartihari had returned back to perform his royal duties and had given up on mourning for Pingala. He said to Gorakhnath ‘ Yogiraj! You have made Bhartihari understand the situation in such a way that he can deliberate contently to his royal duties with his full effort.’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ Raajan! The king Bhartihari is going for asceticism. He has given up everything and i’m taking him to lord Dattatreya.’
Vikramraj replied ‘ Then it is a matter of great dilemma and difficulty yogiraj! The royal subjects are really fond of the king. They wont be able to depart from him. Secondly this may create fear from our enemies.Besides he has grown weak’
Gorakhnath said ‘ He has made up his mind. Do not advice him to alter his decision. It is better for him if he gives up everything and takes refuge under a guru. So you too should try not to let anything effect his decision.’
Vikramraaj replied ‘ Lord! Let him stay here for a while at least till he regains his health. Please stay here as our guest for a few months.’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ Raajan! The soul is powerful and the heart is very feeble. The subjects of attractions keep pulling the human into it. It is possible that today asceticism has bloomed in his conscience and tomorrow he might get drawn back into the worldly pleasures. Which is why he cannot stay here any longer. You have the potential to take care of the royal subjects and fight your enemies. You yourself should take on all the duties that Bhartihari would undergo. On terms of his fragility, it will go away by the mercy of his guru.’
Yet still Vikramraaj insisted a lot due to which their departure was delayed for another three days. When it was time to leave, all the queens and women started crying. Bhartihari left. He left his royal robes and clothings and dressed himself in clothings of that of a yogi. Vikramraaj had tears in his eyes when they left and the subjects were anxious. Everyone accompanied them to main gate of the city and bade them goodbye.
After a while, Gorakhnath stopped at a place and said ‘ Raajan! This heart is really fickle. Time and time again it runs towards attachments. If you have the belief that you can keep it under your control then it is worthwhile being an ascetic. But you still have a choice. If you do not have such wish then it is better that you return home. Hymns can also be sung staying there.’
The king replied ‘ No – no yogiraj! Now my palace doesn’t do anything for me. The world seems a lot dreadful and frightening. I am coming with you.’
Gorakhnath said ‘ Even a yogi has to live up to the needs of their appetite and the only way to do so is by asking for alms and nothing else. In a family oriented households there will be young maidens. To fall blind into their mesmerizing beauty will have consequences far worse than throwing oneself in hell. Therefore it is essential to see them and treat them as a motherly figure.’
Bhartihari listened to his words carefully. Gorakhnath once again told Bhartihari that now even his queens were motherly figures for him. For the strengthening of this thought the rookie yogis are sent initially to ask alms from their own residence. So, you too should go to your palace and address your queens as mother and ask them for alms.’
Obediently Bhartihari hasted towards his own kingdom and stood at the boundary and said ‘Alakh’. Recognizing the king’s voice the queens rushed to where the yogi was standing and the yogi upon seeing them said ‘ Mata! Please give me some alms.’
Tearfully the queens replied ‘ Maharaaj! We are slaves to your feet. Why are you treating us this way? Please return back to Antahapur.’
Bhartihari said ‘ Matas! The husband in one birth in other births can have the possibility of coming back as a father or a son. Now i am not the king Bhartihari but yogi Bhartiharinath. The emergence of a yogi has happened from the death of a king. So no relations of the life before can remain. So please consider me your son and give me some alms.’
The queens said weeping ‘ How can we consider this? How can we even consider a husband to be a son. We have never heard of such a thing. Please do not destroy our privileges.’
The king replied ‘ Matas! Your Bhartihari has already left. Why would you unnecessarily be depressed? Praise and pray to the almighty. It will do you good. Now please give me alms quickly and prepare for me to leave. I cannot stay here for long.’
The queens insisted him to come inside but he refused and said ‘ Matas! If you delay on giving me alms then i’ll leave.’
The queens now understood that the king was obstinate about his decision. They worried that he would leave empty handed if they kept crying and insisted him to stay. They then gave him alms and started to cry over again. Bhartihari ignored their cries and left. On seeing Bhartihari back with the alms, Gorakhnath was pleased. He understood that now he would not be shaken on the road to asceticism. With the intention to take him to Dattatreya as soon as possible, Gorakhnath enchanted the bhasma with yanastra mantra and put it on Bhartihari as well as on his own forehead with the effects of which within few seconds they reached Dattatreya’s ashram situated at Girineer.
On reaching the ashram both Gorakhnath and Bhartihari payed obeisance to Dattatreya and Dattatreya pleasingly gave them both his blessings. After that Bhartihari was given the initiation of nath panth and was taught all the yog vidyas.
- Chauranginath’s extreme penance
In the middle of this Macchendranath too met them there and asked the permission with Dattatreya for the pilgrimous journey to Badrikashram. Dattatreya granted him the permission and advised Macchendranath to take Gorakhnath with him. Advancing from Girineer hill they reached Kaundilyapur town. On reaching there, they saw that a child with his hands and legs amputated was abandoned in between a chaurangi (junction) and he was fluttering with pain. A crowd had gathered around him and once in a while the king’s soldier would scold and shout at them and they would leave. But the crowd would once again prevail.
The guru and disciple upon hearing the conversations of the people standing in the crowd came to know that the boy’s name was Krishnagar. It also came to their knowledge that he was the son of the king Sashangar. Due to some unknown crime the king had amputated both his arms and legs and had left him there. This was the reason that the public was scorning the king and queen.
On seeing the boy in pain Macchendranath wanted to know his past endeavors. Upon concentrating on the subject it came to him that once the king Sashangar had gone to take a bath in the Krishna river. After his bath, he was offering water in his open palms to the lord Surya when drops of sperms fell into his palms. From the sperm of lord Shiva, in no time a child took form. This was the very child that was the son of the king born without any father or mother. As the child grew up, he was sharp minded and eligible. But the queen conspired to kill him and blamed him of adultery and had put him in his current situation.
Macchendranath told Gorakhnath everything about the boy to which Gorakhnath replied ‘ Guruji! This child is extraordinary. Why not save his life and take him with us?’
Macchendranath replied ‘ Gorakhnath you are always trapped by your generosity. We are yogis. For how long will we keep carrying him around?’
Gorakhnath requested ‘ Guruji! Firstly he is a subject to your generosity and support. Secondly he has emerged from the sperm of lord Shiva which makes him different from others. He will be grateful if we take him with us.’ Macchendranath gave him his permission and said ‘ To take him with us we must first ask for the king’s permission.’
With this decision they both presented them towards king Sashangar and asked for his permission to take Krishnagar with them. This didn’t seen to bother the king. He quickly granted them their wish.
They both reached the place where the child was and Gorakhnath said ‘ Gurudev! He has been placed in this chaurangi(junction), so i would like to name him Chauranginath.’
When Gorakhnath placed his hands over Chauranginath’s body, his pain left his body. After that Gorakhnath took him in his arms and headed towards Badrikashram. He got lord Shiva’s darshan and prayed to him ‘O lord! Please eradicate the fear of this child.’
Following that, attaining his guru’s wish, Gorakhnath took the child to a cave on a hill and told the child ‘ you should meditate here. I have to go on some pilgrimous journeys. Therefore it is necessary that i leave you here. But you have to keep in mind that you have to constantly keep looking at the big rock right above your head because that rock can fall at any moment. But if you keep you sight on it, with its effect it will not fall. If you distract yourself, it will fall right off and be the reason of your death.’
Gorakhnath after giving him the knowledge said that he would return after his journey and left the cave. For the protection, he covered the entrance of the cave a large rock. He then summoned over goddess Chamunda. Upon his call, Chamunda appeared and Gorakhnath payed his respect to the goddess and said ‘ Bhagwati! A child is meditating in this very cave. Please protect him against wild animals and also for his meal please provide him with one fruit everyday.’
‘Tatastu!’ with his Chamunda disappeared. Gorakhnath told about all the things that had happened to Macchendranath. Then they set off to their journeys. At one place both the guru and disciple thought of venturing to different pilgrimage and on that note they both parted ways. This way, going to various pilgrimage, many years had passed by.
Whereas Chauranginath was chanting the mantra given by his guru constantly in the cave without stirring. He had his vision set on the big rock above his head as per Gorakhnath had instructed. He didn’t for once let himself get distracted.
Bhagwati Chamunda was tending to him as per her promise to Gorakhnath. Everyday she would deliver one seasonal fruit to him. But Chauranginath would not even look at the fruit. He would fear that if he let the rock out of his sight for even a moment he would die by its fall. So consequently his concentration remained intact as well as heaps and heaps of fruits had piled up. This way twelve years had passed by and Gorakhnath returned to the cave. He removed the big rock from the entrance and entered the cave. Bhagwati Chamunda was at the door. Seeing Gorakhnath she said ‘ Yogiraj! According to what i’ve promised you i’ve been protecting and taking care of your disciple. Everyday i have presented him one fruit which is why there are thousands of fruits around. He didn’t look at even one.’
Gorakhnath laughed and said ‘ How could he? Poor lad, due to the fear of death, he couldn’t for once take his eyes off the rock.’
Then after chamunda disappeared. When Gorakhnath looked inside the cave, all he could see were the piles of fruit. He called out ‘ Chauranginath! I, Gorakhnath, have returned from my journey. Set aside the fruits and come out here.’
Upon hearing Gorakhnath’s order, Chauranginath removed the fruits out of his way and came outside. Due to his guru’s mercy his hands and legs had regrown. His body had become weak but by Gorakhnath’s powerful vision his body became strong again. After that he took him to Shiva temple and by praying he gained blessings for Chauranginath. Second to that for the next six months staying at the same place, he kept teaching him shastras. Chauranginath became knowledgeable of all the vidyas and became competent in the use of weapons. Then, when Gorakhnath thought that Chauranginath had become competent in all forms and manners, he headed for the kingdom of Kaudinyapur with Chauranginath to confront his father.
- The miracles of Chauranginath
On reaching Kaudinyapur, Chauranginath receiving Gorakhnath’s consent thought of a way to demonstrate his mystical powers. Due to the effects of his vidya, various types of rampage started happening. The king sent forth his spies to find the cause of this but for many days he couldn’t reason it out. Other spies told the king that two yogis were staying outside the town amongst which one is older and the other is a youth. And also said that these yogis were the sole reason to such upheaval. Specially the enactment of the young yogi seemed to be even more evasive. The king ordered for the captivity of the two yogis. But whoever went to capture them they did not return alive. So the king sent some more of his soldiers. A while later the king realized that even his soldiers had died. This filled the king with rage and he decided to go himself with an army to capture the yogis.
Gorakhnath through his super vision saw the king coming over with an army and he ordered Chauranginath for a war and said ‘ We need to teach the imbecile king a lesson for his cruel deeds. Fight him and win this war.’
Chauranginath stood before the king Sashangar and his army. It seemed unfair to see the king and his army at one side and a Chauranginath alone on the other. Yet still the war was on and both sides with all their powers kept fighting up until the kings army retreated and fled away. The defeated king with the wish to keep himself alive fell down on the feet of Chauranginath and said ‘ Yogeswor! You are a mystical being, what is my comparison to you? Please forgive my crime and tell me of what use can i come to you?’
At that very moment Gorakhnath came at that place. The king bowed to Gorakhnath and Gorakhnath blessed him and said ‘ Raajan! May you be well. The yogi who has defeated you, try recognizing him.’
Though the king tried identifying the yogi, it came to no avail. He said ‘ Maharaj! It has not come into my mind as to who this yogi is. Now only you can introduce him to me.’
Gorakhnath said ‘ Raajan! Try to remember. Twelve years ago you had cut off your son’s hands and legs and left him in the chaurangi handicapped.’
He replied ‘ Yes yogiraaj! I had done such a thing but it was only because he had done a great crime.’
Gorakhnath said ‘ But that child was innocent. Your queen had falsely accused him.’
The king thought for a while and said ‘ But yogiraaj! The child must be dead by now. Even if he is alive, his life is useless without his hands and legs. Two sadhus had taken him from here. I do not know what has become of him.’
Gorakhnath addressed ‘ To ask for that child, i myself and my guru had come to you. This youth Chauranginath is the very handicapped son of yours.’
The king was amazed and said ‘ Maharaj! He has all his hands and legs. We had cut off and thrown apart the child’s limbs.’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ Raajan! We are benevolent yogis. We have sacrificed our selfishness so whatever we wish we can do it with all simplicity. To rejoin amputated limbs and to cut it off, it is possible with just our thinking of it. We can create a new world with just our wish. Raajan with guru’s mercy, the regrowth of his limbs have been possible with just my vision.’
The king bowed his head on Gorakhnath’s feet and said ‘ Then it must have been you who has taught him the art of fighting and the use of weapons.’
Gorakhnath said ‘ He has for twelve years without distractions meditated at one place. Later he also learned the art of using weapons. This way your son has become fully qualified.’
Hearing this the king was filled with shame. He got up and hugged his son. He then took both guru and disciple to the castle with all respect. The queen too asked forgiveness for her wrong doing. Gorakhnath accepted being a guest for three days after which taking Chauranginath along with him headed for yet another pilgrimage once again. The king requested him too stay a little longer but he didn’t.
- From Manik to Adbanganath
Making their way from Kaundinyapur, visiting many pilgrims, the guru and disciple were close on their way to Bhama town and was walking through the passage of Aarunya. At that time, extreme heat was prevailing. Due to the extremity of the heat it was twice as hard to keep on walking. So they both seated them under the shade of a tree. During this time a farmer was busy ploughing his field which was near to that place. At that moment his servant came with his meal. He then too sat himself under another tree to have his food. Seeing this the two yogis approached him and started saying ‘Alakh Alakh’. Finding the two sadhus in front of him he asked with sweetness in his voice and with courtesy ‘ Sadhubaba! Who are you and what do you want?’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ We are yogis. Today we have had no food which is why we are hungry.’
The farmer’s name was Manik. He said ‘ You have come in the right moment. The food have just arrived from my home. Here take it and eat.’
‘Okay.’ they both sat down. The farmer served the food on leaves and gave it to them and they started eating. This way whatever amount of food had come from his house was finished. But the farmer was not worried about it. They both quenched their thirst by drinking the cool water from a well. Then Gorakhnath asked the farmer ‘ Brother! What is your name?’
The farmer replied ‘ What will you do by knowing my name? You have received the meal now make your way.’
Gorakhnath said ‘ Brother, why do you show anger? We were just asking to know the name of the person who has given us food. If you don’t wish to tell us then it is your own wish.’
The farmer said ‘ It is not my habit to tell my name. Then what is it to you that you know my name. It is better that sadhus come and go. Why would i invite them again by telling them my name?’
Gorakhnath said ‘ Alright. Don’t tell us. But you have quenched our hunger by giving us your food so ask for something. Anything you want will be granted.’
Manik started laughing and said ‘ Now, you are trying to put a price on the meal. O Maharaaj! You yourself ask for alms here and there and you are telling me that i ask you for anything. What kind of rubbish is this?’
He replied ‘ our wish is to grant you something. Whatever you need ask of it. Whatever you want we’ll deliver. Tell me what do you want?’
He said once again ‘ I don’t need anything. If i had any desire then i would ask. What am i going to get from you anyway.’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ Atleast tell us what you want. We can give you everything.’
Manik said a little loudly ‘ When i have nothing to ask of you then what advantage are you going to get by repeating yourself consistently? Now show me some mercy and leave.’
Gorakhnath understood that this man was really obstinate. To get him on track Gorakhnath thought of a plan and said ‘ Okay! Then will you oblige?’
The farmer said ‘ Ask what you want.’
Gorakhnath wanted a confirmation ‘ You won’t step out, will you?’
He replied with slight agitation’ No! You are unnecessarily fretting on this.’
He said ‘ Okay then do this much that you will act in reverse to what you wish to do. Will you be able to do this?’
The farmer replied ‘ This is no big deal. You have asked of a very unusual wish. Looks like you are some kind of a prankster. Seems like you have something else going on in your mind. Are you sure you will not steal at night?’
Listening to what the farmer had to say Gorakhnath simply said ‘We are yogis my brother. From what angles do we seem like thieves to you?’
He replied ‘ Sometimes even the dakoits take the disguise of a yogi which is why i doubted you. Now scram from here.’
Gorakhnath said ‘ We will be leaving now but tell us are you ready to oblige to what we have asked of you?’
Again he started getting annoyed and with irritation in his voice said ‘I will do it, it’s done. Now will you leave me alone.’
Gorakhnath laughed and said ‘Alright we’ll leave.’ and left with Chauranginath.
After the guru and disciple had left, it came to Manik’s thought that he had talked with the yogis in utter disrespect. Now he had made up his mind to do his activities as per his promise to them. Which is why whenever he experienced wanting to do something, he would do everything opposite to it. Whenever he was hungry he would drink water, whenever he was thirsty he would eat something. Whenever he felt sleepy he kept himself up and whenever he wasn’t feeling sleepy he would lie down and try to sleep. When he felt like sitting he would stand up and when he felt like standing up he would sit or lie down. Whenever he felt like talking he would go mute and whenever he felt like maintaining silence he would talk unnecessarily. This way he did everything against his own will. By this his daily routines got ruined. Staying up all night without sleep was affecting him. Everything was making negative impacts on him. His health started deteriorating due to which his body started to shrink within. His strength had come to a minimal his wife tried to make him understand that it is not right to listen to yogis and that they fool you and scam you.
But he presented his view ‘ What have they taken from me? This promise was given after i had provided them with food. They had for so many times asked me to ask for something and that they would grant me anything but i didn’t. When i didn’t ask for anything how could they give me anything.’
This way no one could consult him to change his ways and he kept his promise with obstinacy. Twelve years passed by as he continued. One day Macchendranth, Gorakhnath and Chauranginath all three arrived at his doorstep. They had been returning from their pilgrim from Badrikashram when Gorakhnath remembered the day when he had met Manik and had asked for his promise that he’ll do everything opposite his will.he requested Macchendranath that they go by for a visit at the farmer’s house.
When they reached his house, Gorakhnath saw that the farmer had become very weak and unhealthy and asked ‘ Brother! How have you become so weak, diseased and non radiant?’
Manik recognized Gorakhnath at once and said ‘ This is all your doing sadhubaba! This is the result of the promise that i have been keeping which i had made to you.’
Gorakhnath was really pleased that he had kept his promise till present day. He thought that he should be given bliss by granting him knowledge. But if he tells him that then he would say the opposite. He cleverly said ‘ Okay brother! Now your pain will go away. But you’ll have to make me your disciple and grant me the guru mantra.’
He replied ‘ I do not know any guru mantra. And neither will i be a guru. I want you to give me the guru mantra and take me as your disciple.’
Gorakhnath said ‘ What! What are you saying? You have all those qualities that we do not have. That is why we wish to make you our guru.’
He replied ‘ No not at all. I do not have any kind of qualities in me. I myself will be you disciple. Now make no delay and quickly hand me the guru mantra.’
Gorakhnath said ‘ Alright brother! As you wish. Come here.’
He came towards Gorakhnath. Gorakhnath whispered the guru mantra into his ears and made him his disciple. After that what had to happen, happened. Manik’s ignorance left him. When Gorakhnath swirled his hand around Manik all his diseases and weakness got destroyed. Due to the dawning of the truth, he well understood the miracle performance of Gorakhnath and started grasping on his feet.
Gorakhnath gestured towards Macchendranath and said ‘ This is our respected guru, touch his feet.’ He quickly touched Macchendranath’s feet and he blessed him and gave him the initiation of nath panth.
Because of his obstinacy (adbang), he was named Adbangnath. Gorakhnath made him profound in various vidhyas and turned him into a nath yogi. All the three nath yogis then took Adbanganath with them and headed once again to Badrikashram where they gained him the theophany of Shiva and then after left him to meditate. Adbanganath meditated for twelve years after which taking the consent of his guru he left for pilgrimage alone. In the samyog(ritual worship) of Indra, he too was present with all other nath yogis in heaven. On returning he decided to stay in Badrikashram.
- Dharmanath’s version
Dharmanath was the king of Prayaag. His name was coronated by Macchendranath. Before him a king by the name Trivikram used to rule over Prayaag. The king died childless due to which there was no successor to the throne. The king was extremely religious and compassionate and was nurturing to his public. His demise brought sadness to the public and they remained grieving. When the king’s body was taken in order to cremate at Triveni, his queen Rewati went along with his body to the crematory ground as a sati( a ritual in which one sacrifice herself in the fire with her dead husband) . At the same moment Macchendranath and Gorakhnath too were making their way through that place. The most heartfelt cries from the royal families and the public was heard by Gorakhnath and out of compassion asked his guru ‘ Gurudev! I cannot witness such a devastating scenario. The dead king’s wife is going to give her life. Because of being childless, after this there will be quarrels between the family members as to who shall be enthroned. There is also the risk of enemies. If they attack the kingdom will be ruined. Self centered ruler will dominate the public which will be the cause of the possibility of increment in dominance and injustice. So by any means this king should be revived.’
Macchendranath said ‘ Son! This king was extremely religious, bestowed with goodness, a devout of the lord due to which during his death his soul left beyond the cosmos. His revival is so not possible.’
Gorakhnath said ‘ Guruji! By manifesting the ritual of entry of the soul into a lifeless body we can bring him into life again. If you allow me, i would like to revive his body with the entry of my soul.’
Macchendranath said ‘ Son! Why would you want to trap yourself into this mess? If you want him to be alive again i myself will provide my soul into his dead body. By under such circumstances my own body will become a corpse.and you will need to take the responsibility to protect it. After 12 years i will once agin enter my own body.’
Gorakhnath agreed to take the responsibility to protect Macchendranth’s dead body. Macchendranath then left his body and entered the dead kings corpse. Soon the king’s body came into life and started walking around. The public and the royal family as well as the queen were now out of their misery and they took the king to the palace.
As time passed by, the queen was soon impregnated and in due tie gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby. He was named Dharmaraaj. Staying inside Trivikram’s body Macchendranath took care of the kingdom and the public. In between this time, queen Rewati had come to know all about the reality about Macchendranath and out of her selfishness she cut Macchendranath’s body, which was kept safely in the Shivalaya, into pieces in such a manner that Macchendranath would not be able to return back to his former body. But her wish could not be fulfilled. A yakshini was sent by lord Shiva to collect all of Macchendranath’s body piece and bring it to Kailash(abode of lord Shiva). This incident occurred when Gorakhnath ha set out to a pilgrimage and handed over the responsibility to the priest of the temple.
At the completion of twelve years, Gorakhnath returned and asked the priest about his guru’s corpse. When the priest tod him what had happened, this caused him great despair. Then performing a samadhi, venturing his soul through different lokas(the three worlds), he reached Kailash. Upon receiving the permission of lord Shiva, he entered into the collective body pieces of Macchendranath and once again brought it back to the Shivalaya.
The king as the embodiment of Macchendranath, performed the coronation ceremony of his son Dharmanath after which he left the kings body and once again returned to his former body. The death of the king came as a great grief for everyone and at last they took his body to the cremation ground where Dharmanath performed the ritual of his father’s cremation. After his father’s death, Dharmanath became very sad.
Later queen Rewati got the information that there were three yogis staying in the shivalaya. When she got the confirmation that one of the yogi was Macchendranath she told her son ‘ Son! Your father is a great yogi. He is ever immortal and he is at this moment in the shivalaya. You go and serve him.’
Dharmanath on reaching the shivalaya, grasped onto his father’s feet and Macchendranath hugged him and gave him his blessings.on his request Macchendranath went to the royal palace and met the queen. Giving his patience to everyone he stayed there for some days and told Dharmanath ‘ Son! You must stay here and look after your mother. If ever we come here, Gorakhnath will give you knowledge.’
When the time period ended, Macchendranath remembered his promise and he along with Gorakhnath, Chauranginath and Adbanganath reached Prayaag. Dharmanath was pleased at the sight of them.
Dharmanath had already bore a son. So he coronated him as the king and then took initiation from Gorakhnath. It was magh sukhla ditiya and later this day became renowned as dharma dwitiya.
Now Dharmanath too walked along with them. He received the theophany of lord Shiva in Badrikashram and was instructed to meditate. For twelve years Dharmanath underwent deep meditation in Badrikashram whereas the others went on various pilgrimage. When Dharmanath’s meditation came to a completion, Macchendranath and Gorakhnath returned to Badrikashram. A festive and feast was organized. All the gods and goddesses, gandarvs, yaksh, rishis-munis, yogis, yatis as well as Chamunda participated in this festive ambiance. This festival continued for a few days and at it’s end everybody blessed Dharmanath to become a great adept. After that they left. On being given knowledge by Gorakhnath, Dharmanath became famous as a disciple. Macchendranath felt that Dharmanath was deserving to preach about the nath panth and commanded him to do so. According to his wish, Dharmanath went about pilgrimages and preached about the nath panth.
- The atonement of Dooranganath
Once, at the town where Gorakhnath was staying, a sudden earthquake seemed to frighten and terrify the people and animals. Seeing this Gorakhnath contemplated on the situation as to why the earth had moved but he couldn’t understand it. Then through his super vision he saw that out of rage, Doranganath had created such chaos. Then Gorakhnath’s curiosity was now on the reason as to why he was so furious. It took no time to know about the truth. Dooranganath was a great adept who was the disciple of the great adept yogi Niranjannath. Dooranganath too had an obedient disciple with him. Dooranganath told him ‘ i want to be in the state of samadhi for twelve years. You have to take on the responsibility of protecting my body.’
The guru devotee agreed to his command and assured him ‘ Gurudev! You can rely on me.’
Dooranganth started his samadhi. His disciple would ask for alms and satisfy his hunger on a daily basis. But one day a person from the town tod him ‘ Brother! You ask for alms daily but you seem to be strong and healthy which is why you should work in order to gain food.’
The disciple said ‘ My guruji is in samadhi. I am responsible for his protection. If i go out to find work how will i be able to take care of him?’
To this somebody else tod him ‘ I’ve seen a lot of people who pretend to take samadhi. Those who are too lazy to make their body indulge in work they make up these sorts of excuses. Alright today i’ll give you alms for the very last time. Do not come here from tomorrow.’
From the next day he couldn’t get any alms from anywhere. Sadly, he seated himself under a tree and started thinking of what to do next. Then a woodcutter came to him and asked him ‘ Yogi baba! What is worrying you?’
He replied ‘Mata! The people here did not give me any alms. They say that i am to find a work in order to help myself but i am also worried about my guru. He is staying in the state of samadhi for twelve years.’
Hearing this the woodcutter brought two pieces of bread from her home and gave it to him and after he finished eating it he said ‘ Mata! It won’t work this way. If you ask of me i’ll too cut and sell the woods myself and in return you make me two breads.’
She replied ‘ I’ll make you two breads. There is no bothering me by that.’
From the next day he started to cut the woods and sell it in the town and buy some flour. The woodcutter used to make the bread out of the flour for him. Although he worked really hard, he couldn’t accumulate enough money to even fill his appetite. Some days he would get nothing because he would not be able to sell anything. This way sometimes he would be half full and sometimes would sleep with an empty stomach. He started getting weaker and weaker day by day but yet he was alert towards his responsibility towards his guru. Gradually, twelve years passed by and Dooranganath came out of his samadhi. Upon seeing his disciple in such state of weakness he asked him the reason and he told him everything. Knowing the miserliness and immoral audacity of the town people, Dooranganath was infuriated. He wanted to give them all death by burning them into ashes with his fire of anger but the disciple pleaded him and tried to calm him down. But he could not succeed.
Dooranganath said ‘ These wicked must be punished for what they’ve done. I’ll destroy this town as a whole.’
The disciple said ‘ Guruji! Wait for today. Let me at least get the woodcutter out of there.’
He agreed to this. The disciple hurriedly went to the woodcutter and said ‘ Mata! You and your family should go away from this town. My gurudev is going to destroy this town.’
The woodcutter and her family quickly evacuated the place and left. On receiving the information from his disciple, Dooranganath out of mere anger started chanting ‘ Pattan so hattan’ (let Pattan be destroyed) and kept throwing enchanted water over.
Although this curse was being given to the town named ‘Ballabhipattan’, but being blind with rage he did not pronounce the full name and just said ‘Pattan’ due to which all the town that had the name ‘Pattan’ in it, came under the effects of the spell. However, Ballabhipattan was destroyed completely. Other towns with the name ‘Pattan’ found the remote effects of the curse. But this action of Dooranganath was against the well being of the world and against the discipline of yog.
Gorakhnath with his power of yog provided protection to the other towns. This saved the other towns but Ballabhipattan could not be saved.
This action of Dooranganath was taken as inappropriate by Gorkhnath and he went to met him. Upon seeing Gorakhnath, he got up and bowed to him and requested him to take a seat with all respect. After being seated Gorakhnath said ‘ Dooranganath! By saying ‘pattan so hattan’ you have deliberately tried to harm the innocent beings.’ I have been able to save the other towns with the name Pattan, but Ballabhipattan had been destroyed completely. Has this action of yours been in accords to the nath panth?’
Dooranganath could not think of an answer. Gorakhnath once again said ‘ The duty of yogis is not to destroy but to wish for the well being of all beings. They shouldn’t be treated with anger but with forgiveness.’
Dooranganath realized his mistake. He said to Gorakhnath ‘ Maharaaj! I have committed a very big mistake. I have deep regrets which is why i would like to atone for it. Please tell me what i should do?’
Gorakhnath said ‘Near the banks of a sea in Dwarikapuri, there is spiritual preachings of the many yogis of nath panth. It will be better that you go there and decide.’
Dooranganath did as told and went there with his disciple. The public of Ballabhipattan had despised him due to which they had stopped giving alms.
On reaching the bank of the sea in Bwarikapuri, the yogis who had come together came to know about the ill-effective curse of Dooranganath and came to this decision that he go through a severe meditation for thirty six years. For the first twelve years he must meditate by standing only on his one feet, the next twelve years lying behind his back and the next twelve years he must atone by standing on his head. Doorananath accepted his sentence and he meditated in the manner he was told for thirty six years. This way he got rid of his anger and pride.
- Meeting Ajpanath
After the atonement testament of Dooranganath, Gorakhnath set off to pilgrim. Going around these many pilgrimage he met young yogi Ajpanath at a place and went along with him. He visited many places situated at the banks of the sea. Then going through Hinglaaj hill he reached the country of Gandhar. Following this he set foot on Suleman hill where the disciples of Ajpanath was deep in meditation. When the meditating disciples came to know about Gorakhnath’s entry in Suleman hill, they were all pleased and showed great respect to him. Gorakhnath seeing them give such respect in return taught them yog vidyas and rituals.
After staying there for few days, he bade farewell to Ajpanath and reached the Katasaraaj pilgrim. He resided in a hillock there and preaching about the nath panth made many disciples. He made them practice the rituals of yog and vidyas. After which he sat himself in the hillock in samadhi for fifty years in stability. Due to the increment in his many miracles the hill was named Gorakhtila. After his samadhi was terminated he once again set off to another pilgrimage. Along with him there were his many disciples. After venturing to a numerous place he came to a stop at Dugraal in Uttarakhand near a village and stayed there with his disciples for a few days.
- The poor gets a fortune
Among the many disciples of Gorakhnath, one was called Pawannath. Once in the essentiality of milk, Gorakhnath sent him to the village to ask for some. When Pawannath reached the village, he started asking where he can get some milk. Some notorious people pointed out to a house of a very poor brahmin and told him he can get milk there. ‘Because he is the owner of many cows, interested in being a good hostess and a devotee of sadhus and sants you should go there. At this time no one will have milk but him.’
The disciple took his words to be true. He couldn’t acknowledge that he was being mocked. So, he went to this brahmin’s house and said ‘Alakh’. But the brahmin was so poor that he didn’t even have enough clothes to cover his whole body. Even his wife possessed only one dirty ragged loincloth which she wore when she would go out of her house. Due to which both husband and wife usually used to stay naked in their home.
When Pawannath stood at their doorstep and said ‘Alakh’, the brahmani quickly put on her loincloth and came to the door and feeling rather ashamed said ‘ Sadhubaba! I am in no position to give you anything or else i would not send you empty handed.’
While saying this tears filled up her eyes and before she would finish what she had to say a drop and two fell down. Finding himself under such situation, Pawannath was embarrassed. He understood now that some wicked town’s people had made a mockery. He felt sorry for the woman and said ‘ Mata! Don’t be so depressed. When the supreme lord has not bestowed you anything then how will you ever give anything. But making peace with his wish and being content is the best way towards your well being.’
After saying a few words to console her, Pawannath left. He said ‘Alakh’ in one another house where he received some milk. Pawannath presented him to Gorakhnath’s service with the milk in his hands. Keeping the milk in a vessel and putting it in front of Gorakhnath, he started to tell his guru about all that had taken place. When Pawannath told hi everything, Gorakhnath melted with generosity. He took a pinch of holy ash and enchanted it with a mantra and handing it to Pawannath said ‘ Go right now and place this holy ash in the house of the brahmin. By the lord’s mercy his situation will change in no time.’
Taking the holy ash Pawannath once again stood in front of the brahmin’s house and said ‘Alakh’. The bhrahmini once again appeared in her old, torn loincloth. She couldn’t understand as to why Pawannath had returned again and so looked at him with questionable eyes.
Pawannath said ‘ I told about your situation to my Gurudev. He upon hearing it was filled with generosity and asked me to put this holy ash in your home. That is why I’ve come here once again.’
Bhramani said ‘ Come inside and put it.’
Pawannath put the holy ash in the house and left. After a few moment a very rich man arrived at her door with wealth and called out ‘ Is the bhrahman here?’
This time the brahman came out wearing his worn out clothes. On seeing the brahmin the man said ‘ All these things have come for you.’
Brahman asked ‘ Who has sent all this?’
He replied ‘ It has been sent in confidentiality which is why i cannot disclose the name of the sender. Tell me where should i put it?’
The brahmin asked him to keep it inside his house. When the person kept everything inside, he left. Out of curiosity the husband and wife started opening the things. In it were clothes, accessories, gold coins and many other in a great amount. Brahmani said ‘ This all seems to the fruit of the sadhu’s guru’s mercy.’
That day the husband and wife ate their meal peacefully and happily slept. In the dawn when they woke up, they could not believe their eyes. In replacement of their old house stood a magnificent and strongly built villa which was no less than a palace. When they stepped foot outside their door, they saw a cowshed and a hundred and more cows before them. In just one night such shocking miracles had taken place that one would not even wish for in their dreams.
Some moment later Gorakhnath himself arrived along with his disciple. The husband and wife both respectfully bowed to Gorakhnath and invited him and gave them milk to drink. They stood next to him waiting for his command. Gorakhnath gave them the blessing of never ending happiness for which the brahmin couple were grateful. Then he showed them his mercy and returned back. Seeing the brahman attain such prosperity all the town’s people were very much astonished. The wicked town’s people who had made Pawannath a victim to their mockery were very much ashamed and asked forgiveness to the brahmin couple. The brahman forgave him.
- The mercy of Jwaladevi
After staying for a few days, Gorakhnath once again intended to go on pilgrims and going to various pilgrimage, he reached the place where goddess Jwaladevi was. When the Bhagwati came to know about Gorakhnath’s arrival, she herself came out of the temple and stood in front with the thought of welcoming him. When Gorakhnath saw her in front of him, he immediately folded his hands together and greeted her and started to have conversations with her. Bhagwati told Gorakhnath’ Tomorrow i myself will make you your meal. So don’t you go anywhere.’ He showed his gratitude towards her generosity and said ‘ Bhagwati! Here at your place, sacrifices of flesh are given and offered to you. The flesh and meat are not edible as per our discipline of a sadhu so how can i eat at your place.’
Hearing this the goddess replied ‘ Gorakhnath! I am not at a bit interested in consuming meat. This depends upon the interests of the devotees on what type of sacrifice they would like to offer. The majority of the people of kaliyug offer the sacrifice as per what they desire. With this they think that they have pleased the goddess, but I’m never pleased by such sacrifice and yet still i grant them their wishes. The devotees who after the sacrifice of animals achieve prosperity, they do not take it as my blessing but think it as a fruit to their sacrifices. So, i am not at all responsible for these sort of sacrifices given by the people.’
Gorakhnath said ‘ Although you are not to blame still i cannot accept your invitation.’
The goddess said ‘ Gorakhnath! I will not serve you such meal. Whatever you choose to eat, so shall i make with my own hands and serve it to you. So you should accept my invitation.’
Gorakhnath replied ‘Alright! I’ll accept it. But you will only cook the rice that I’ll receive as alms for the meal.’
The goddess agreed and he said ‘ Bhagwati! You start preparing the fire. When i return then only will the meal be cooked. You’ll need to wait because i can’t guarantee you when or where I’ll receive the alms and at what time will i return.’
‘Okay’ the goddess replied and started building up the fire and Gorakhnath left. After the fire was ready she sat next to it waiting for Gorakhnath to return. From there Gorakhnath went to many places. At first he saw no necessity to ask for alms but then he remembered his promise to the goddess and then headed towards the east direction to a village. He sat in one place and kept his begging vessel in front of him. The people started putting the alms in his vessel. Gorakhnath stated that it would be good if the vessel is carried off only after it is fully filled. Hearing this all the people started filling the vessel with enough amount of grains. No matter how much rice was put into the vessel it would not be filled. This was astonishing to the people. Thousand measures of rice was contained by the small vessel yet it could not be fully filled. Everywhere the mystery of the vessel traveled around and people from afar started approaching and filling the vessel with grains. It couldn’t be filled but became a subject of amusement. At that moment a wealthy childless man from Patan town came towards Gorakhnath and started pleading him to go with him to his house. He said ‘I am childless. So i would like to offer all my wealth to you.’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ I cannot come right now. I’ll come after a few days. Till then make good management of your wealth.’ With this note the man returned to his home.
Now Gorakhnath moved from the east to the west village where he built a small hut. Unlike the east, he did not keep the vessel but ordered the villagers that whatever they wished to give in alms they keep it inside the hut. With his command the people started putting the alms in the hut. This way the hut was filled with grains within a few days. After that he said that whoever is in need, who is poor and without food, they could take grains from the hut as per their requirement. The poor were overjoyed to hear this and started taking the grains themselves and went. This information traveled till lands far far away that at a certain place from a sadhu’s hut everyone were getting required amount of grain. Thousands of people would daily take desired amount of grain. The grain stock would not run out. No matter how much it would reduce to it would be filled again by the next day.
After that he made khichadi(made of rice and pulse) in the skull he had and gave it to the hungry to eat. There was no count as to how many people filled their hunger and left. Yet still the khichadi would not be finished.
They way people started hailing him seeing the effects of his yogic strength. Gorakhnath understood that the people here has already been affected by his mystical demonstrations then he told his devotees ‘ You people have seen now, the powers of yog. My intentions on showing these miracles were to make you knowledgeable about the strength of yog. The goddess Jwaladevi has invited me for a meal. But you people have been offering her animal sacrifices. Although i have agreed to eat there, it will only take place after i see the place filled with offerings that are righteous to be taken.’
The devotees replied ! Maharaaj! We do not do this in reference to our wishes. The great learners have told us that the goddess will not be pleased without the sacrifice of animals. Which is why we offer her such sacrifices.’
Gorakhnath said ‘ You innocent people! Those who have told you about this are not great learners but they are fools. They try to distract you from the righteous path. Now, terminate the sacrificial offerings to the goddess.’
Some people started doubting the idea and said ‘ But the priest and others in the temple also encourages us to do the same, how can we be disobedient to him?’
He replied ‘ The sacrifice of animal is violence. Make a pledge to not perform such act. Or else yogis like us won’t accept the sacrament of the goddess. So if you want me to accept the goddess invitation then you have to put a halt to the sacrifices. Or else i won’t be eating the meal made by her hands and she will keep waiting with the fire burning next to her. In that situation you’ll have to be the victim to her rage.’
Hearing this they immediately took the vow to never offer animal sacrifices to the goddess. Under Gorakhnath’s advice they preached out the message everywhere. Likewise everyone decided to offer her pure substances. This place was the abode of Gorakhnath and later became famous by the name Gorakhpur.
He left from there and met the devotee who wanted to offer all his wealth at pattan town and took him along with him to the hill of Dhawalagiri. He wanted to provide him yog vidyas but at that moment he was invited to a place near Trisul Ganga where there was mass of yogis who had come together. Although the place was very far from where he was, yet he went there taking his disciple along. But the conference of the yogis did not provide him faith and their opinions proved indifferent to his own opinion. So he did not stay there long. After this he decided to return to Dhawalagiri once again.
- Many other miraculous events
At such opportunity, some nepalese travelers were passing by the same passage returning from their journey to Nilkanth. They came to know about Gorakhnath’s presence and were excited to meet him. They were all the followers of Macchendranath. They met Gorakhnath and introduced themselves and said ‘ Yogiraj! At this time Mahindradev rules over Nepal. He has taken buddhism as his religion and he is compelling us to do the same. For this he has accepted the discipline of sam(reasoning), daam(monetary allurement), danda(punishment) and bhed(creating divisions). Which is why he is giving us great torture. If you could come to Nepal with us and help us, it will be your great mercy.’
Upon listening to their sorrows and them insisting constantly he stopped at a place by the banks of Bagmati near Lalitapaatan. He sat in a one position and started his meditation. The nepalese asked if he will go to the kingdom to which he replied ‘ As long as i am seated here, the kingdom of Nepal will not experience rainfall and without no reason i shall not stand.’
The nepalese left. They told their friends and relatives about Gorakhnath’s arrival and what he had decided. That year it didn’t rain in Nepal and the people understood it was due to Gorakhnath. When it didn’t rain the second year and the next, the king of Nepal started to worry a lot. The public were experiencing the catastrophe. The royal treasury was also starting to run out. So the king called up the royal astrologer and asked for the reason of such famine. The astrologer said ‘ Maharaj! It seems that some yogi is meditating in reverse to bring this famine to the kingdom. You should send a spy to investigate it.’
The king sent many spies in every direction. Within a few days they returned and reported to the king ‘ Maharaj! By the banks of Bagmati one yogi is meditating. We tried to talk to him but he gave us no answers. Accompanying him is one of his disciple, who likewise does not answer. But we found out from the travelers who had returned from their Nilkanth journey that he is Gorakhnath, the disciple of Macchendranath. As long as he stays seated in his position, there will be no rainfall.’
The king gave this a lot of thought. When he himself could not think of anything, he called upon his ministers and astrologers and asked for their advice. He said ‘ The spies have informed me that the disciple of Macchendranth, Gorakhnath is meditating seated. As long as he is seated the kingdom wont have rainfall. So, how are we supposed to make him stand?’
Respectfully the astrologers replied ‘ Your highness! He will not stand not until the maltreatment on the followers of Macchendranth does not come to an end.’
The king said ‘Let us suppose for once that the maltreatment has been stopped. Still what strategy should we use to make Gorakhnath stand from his seat, this is also something that we should think about.’
One of the minister presented him an idea ‘ Your highness! I have thought of an idea for this. We should make a beautiful idol or a drawing of yogeswor Macchendranth and establish it in a carriage. When the carriage presents in front of Gorakhnath, he will see the idol of his guru and he will surely stand to bow to him.’
The king replied ‘ This is a very effective plan. Waste no time and make preparations for it.’ The ministers after receiving the king’s orders, immediately started working on it’s management. In one carriage, the idol of Macchendranath was kept and with great excitement the procession was taken out. The followers of Macchendranth were specially invited to participate in it. All the people went along in this journey too. The king Mahendradev himself was walking in front of all, leading the carriage. When the carriage reached the place where Gorakhnath was seated, seeing the carriage of yogiraj Macchendranath, he immediately stood up. He respectfully bowed to the idol of his guru.
As soon as he stood up, clouds filled up the sky and it started raining. The king felt guilty about the bad deeds that he had done and threw himself on the feet of Gorakhnath. He apologized to Gorakhnath’ Yogiraj! Please forgive me. In the future, no followers of Macchendranth as well as yours will never be mistreated.’
He forgave the king and then left for a hill which was situated at quiet a distance and stayed there. There he gave the yog and many other vidyas to his disciple who was from Pattan. He spent fourteen years at that place. Though at that time the king had promised Gorakhnath that none of Machendranath’s or Gorakhnath’s followers would be mistreated yet still he ignored his promise and once again showed his tyranny over them. The followers of Macchendranath went to Gorakhnath for help and told him every event in which they had to go through torture. Gorakhnath was displeased on hearing this and he thought it would be appropriate to remove Mahindradev from his throne.’
He thought ‘ Such an unjust person does not deserve to be on the throne. The king who himself or by the help of his supporters creates such violence is a great sinner. Whether the assaults are done knowingly or unknowingly, the king cannot be free from its consequences.’
As he bade farewell to the nepalese, he said ‘ Whatever assaults you have been experiencing will soon be terminated.’ The nepalese went away. When Gorakhnath was teaching his disciple from Pattan, an old woman along with her son came to him and starting serving him. Her son’s name was Basant. Gorakhnath thought ‘ King Mahindradev has to be dethroned. Not only because he is a tyrant but also because he is childless. After his death, somebody else will surely be the successor to his throne.’
At that moment the old woman’s son came to him. Seeing him it dawned in Gorakhnath ‘ Why not make Basant the king of that kingdom.’ He approached Basant with his opinion. Basant seemed very much surprised on hearing his proposal. He replied ‘ Whatever you wish i am here to fulfill obediently.’
He told Basant ‘ Make the figurines of humans from the earth that you take out of the lake. Make them in such quantity that there are thousands of them.’ Basant asked curiously ‘ What will we be doing of those figurines, guruji?’ He replied ‘ Those will be your army Basant. With their strength you will defeat king Mahindradev.’
This seemed to surprise Basant even more on how will these figurines would ever carry the duty of an army. But he did not raise the question to Gorakhnath. Gorakhnath became aware of his thoughts and putting an end to his curiosity said ‘Son! Those figurines will not remain lifeless.’
Basant obeyed him and then started making many figurines out of the earth from the lake. In a matter of days, thousands of figurines were ready. Seeing this, Gorakhnath brought them into life by the use of the life elixir mantra. This way an army of a thousand men came into existence. Then he sprinkled the holy ash onto them that by its effects they were all armed with weapons. Now a fully equipped and a fully functional army was ready for battle. After that he put the enchanted ash on Basant’s forehead due to which he turned into a healthy and handsome prince. Then Gorakhnath threw the enchanted ash at all four direction by the effects of which a number of elephants and horses appeared on their own. This way Basant became the adhipati of a well adapted army. Now Gorakhnath gave him the orders ‘ Basant! You should immediately charge towards Mahindradev’s kingdom. Go on, you will with no doubt win this battle. But keep in mind that your army must constantly hail the name of great guru Macchendranath.’
Basant gave his word on this and went forth with his army. He attacked Nepal. Although Mahindradev was startled by the sudden attack, for self defense, he too sent his army. After a huge battle, the king’s army lost the war and fled away.
The king understood that this army was sent by Gorakhnath to defeat him for his treachery. He quickly went and threw himself at Gorakhnath’s feet.
He said ‘ Yogiswor! I have committed a big crime and i ask you for forgiveness. Now please show me some mercy by taking back your army.’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ Raajan! You commit crimes time and time again and ask for forgiveness. I myself have promised to make that lad the king, now how can i retract my words? Like it or not my words will find its fulfillment.’
The king started pleading ‘Maharaaj! Please show me a way by which your promise will be effective and also my kingdom will not go out of my hands. If you wish you are fully potent in doing so.’
Gorakhnath replied ‘ there is only one way to it then. Make Basant your adopted son and after your reign he will be the successor to your throne.’
The king did as he was told. After that the followers of Macchendranath spent their days in peace and happiness. Basant was now known as prince Basantadev. He became the king of Nepal in the starting of the fifth century of b.s. From that day, the worship and rituals of Macchendranath were performed with great importance. After being crowned the king, Basantadev visited Gorakhnath and grasped his legs and payed his gratitude to which Gorakhnath blessed him and said ‘ Son Basant! I am really pleased to see you as a king. You keep having faith towards guru Macchendranath and provide continuity to his worship. In your dynasty, as long as he is worshiped it will provide stability to your kingdom.
He replied ‘ So shall it be gurudev!’
After that he returned back to his kingdom once again. He designated that his dynasty will be named after guru Gorakhnath and will be called ‘ Gorkha’.’
The army made out of the earth that Gorakhnath had brought into life with the elixir mantra who stayed with Basantdev as his army prevailed as ‘Gurkhas’ too. This way the miracles of macchendranath and Gorakhnath are sung till this very day in the kingdom of Nepal. Even in the currency of Nepal we find the name Shree Gorakhnath carved into it. Gorakhnath stayed there for some time after which he went out of India to venture to other asian countries. He traveled through Tibet, China, Arab etc and reached Mecca.
It is said that Gorakhnath stayed in Mecca for some time. His aim was to preach the mystics of yog to the people. The people there took him to be an ordinary sadhu and paid him no notice. He thought some miraculous demonstrations should be performed before their eyes. He laid himself on the entrance door of the mecca-temple in such a way that his feet were towards the temple. Seeing this one of the native summoned him to wake up but when he didn’t, he held Gorakhnath’s feet and turned him in the direction opposite to his prior position. But it came to great astonishment that though Gorakhnath’s feet had been placed in the other way, so had the entrance door of the temple moved back to his feet in the other direction. At that moment other people arrived there and hearing such miracle was astounded. They tried placing his feet at different directions but each time the entrance door would wind up at his feet. They understood that this was no ordinary sadhu. They thought him to be an adept or a messenger from god. The natives started showing their respect. A lot of people showed their curiosity about yog. He gave them many advices about yog. Four exceptional people came to him to attain the knowledge of yog. Gorakhnath told them to come to his place and left from the temple. But when they did not show up, he decided to to go to other places as per his objective. But due to some reason they showed up late at where Gorakhnath was staying. but on not finding him, they went outside of the mecca in search of him. They found out that he was staying in a hill outside. The passage to the hill was very risky. They had to make way through a dense forest. Gorakhnath saw them coming and seeing that he disguised himself as a traveler and said to them ‘ This is a very dangerous forest. Don’t go in there. There are many dangerous wild animals. It would be wise to return.’
They replied with great determination ‘ We have to die, one time or the other. So why be fearful? Out front in that hill is Gorakhnath’s abode. We are going to meet him.’ Seeing their determination Gorakhnath was very much pleased and took them along to the hill where he was staying. He gave them the knowledge of yog to them and after that took them to a disciple of his named Suryanath and told him to teach them the practice of yog. The four yogis started serving Suryanath and learned the practice of yog. At the end, they attained nirvana. On the other hand Gorakhnath traveled around many places. At the end Gorakhnath went to Girinar hill and started staying there in the hermitage of Dattatreya. The people believe that after the completion of samyog organized by Indra , he has been staying there ever since and still now he stays there in unobvious form.
